Ford Edge

Ford Edge 2017 4-door SUV Trim Shown: 2017 SEL 4-door SUV AWD Automatic

Vastly improved, the second-generation Edge carries itself like a pricier European SUV. Based on the commendable Fusion sedan, the Edge likewise delivers a steady, comfortable ride and confident handling that makes it fun to drive. The standard 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gets 21 mpg and is more pleasant than the 3.5-liter V6. A twin-turbo, 2.7-liter V6 is offered on the Sport trim. All use a smooth six-speed automatic. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions are available. The quiet cabin wouldn't be out of place in a luxury car. The roomy interior provides comfortable quarters, front and rear, and cargo space is generous. Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system is comprehensive and easy to use. Safety options include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear cameras.

Ford Edge 2016 Trim Shown: 2016 SEL

We heralded the 2015 Ford Edge as worthy of a most improved trophy. Newfound handling agility and greatly improved interior refinement catapults the model to the top of our midsized SUV ratings. Roomy quarters provide family-sized accommodations front to back, while the power liftgate exposes generous cargo space and a flat load floor. Still, the MyFord Touch infotainment system's small fonts, tightly clustered touchscreen buttons and unintuitive functions give us pause. You'll want to get at least the SEL-trim or better for the power driver's seat and dual-zone automatic climate control. We also recommend finding an Edge equipped with blind spot monitoring and a rearview camera.

Ford Edge 2014 Trim Shown: 2014 Base

Ford added a second engine choice to the Edge lineup for 2011, a 240-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. While it offers good power and excellent fuel economy, the overall package falls short because of so-so refinement and driving dynamics. The addition of the MyFord Touch infotainment system promised a new era of connectivity, but it actually proved to be more of a distraction than a benefit. Ultimately, this version of the Edge, though it ranked mid-pack in our SUV ratings, scores too low for us to recommend it.

A car-based crossover SUV, the Edge arrived for 2007 with a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional, but the Ford doesn't offer a third-row seat. Ride quality is good and the powertrain is quite strong, but it lacks overall refinement. While low doorsills and wide door openings make access easy, interior fit and finish are unimpressive. Outward visibility is somewhat impeded by thick roof pillars, along with lackluster front and rear glass areas. Further, the Edge isn't particularly agile, though its handling is ultimately secure and IIHS crash-test results are commendable. To get features like dual-zone climate control and heated seats you'll need to focus your search on Limited-trimmed models.
