6 foods that make a Whopper look healthful

Published: December 2010

Three of four Americans will be overweight or obese by 2020, says a new forecast by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Yet the battle to make us bulge rages on, with restaurant chains and food makers locked in what appears to be a bid to out-gross one another—and not just financially.

We checked restaurant menus, websites, and supermarket aisles to find the six offerings, all of which contain in a single dish more saturated fat, sodium, or both than you should eat in a single day. (By comparison, a Burger King Whopper seems svelte, with 670 calories, 40 grams of fat, 11 grams of saturated fat, and 970 milligrams of sodium.) Desserts have their own downside: sugar. The Baskin-Robbins shake has 195 grams, at least five times the limit most people should have in a single day.

Bottom line (and we do mean bottom). A person who ate, say, a Chili's Smokehouse Burger each night in place of a 600-calorie dinner could put on an extra 3 pounds per week.
