Ken Weine Vice President, Communications

Ken Weine is Vice President, Communications for Consumers Union, an expert, independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to work for a fair, just and safe marketplace for consumers. CU publishes Consumer Reports and ConsumerReports.org with approximately 8 million total paid subscriptions to its products and services and more than $200 million in revenue.

Mr. Weine manages communications and media strategy for Consumers Union and Consumer Reports and oversees a staff of eleven. For Consumer Reports' magazine and Web site, he directs editorial and trade publicity, and oversees creation and distribution of CR's syndicated newspaper column, radio program, and television news service. For Consumers Union, working with CU's West Coast and D.C. offices, he manages and coordinates publicity of its advocacy campaigns on health care, food and product safety, and financial privacy. In addition, he designs and implements public education campaigns on a variety of topics related to CU's mission. During Mr. Weine's tenure, the organization increased its profile and visibility, especially on television, with the installation of an on-site camera, successfully launched a new magazine, ShopSmart, experimented with innovative ad campaigns that drove traffic to CR.org, and expanded its brand awareness to new audiences by doing outreach to blogs and other emerging media.

Before joining CU in 2006, Mr. Weine worked for over six years at Newsweek. As Communications Director he managed publicity for Newsweek's U.S. and international editions, and Newsweek.com. His tenure also included managing the Creative Services department, which was responsible for creating all messaging and marketing materials for the worldwide sales staff. His accomplishments include helping position Newsweek to win three National Magazine Awards, landing "Executive Team of the Year" honors from AdWeek and MediaWeek magazines in 2004, and inclusion on Advertising Age's "A-List" in 2002.

A lawyer and political organizer by training, Ken was a Staff Attorney and the Communications Director at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. He designed and implemented marketing and communications strategy for this nonprofit legal institute involved in litigation, public education and scholarship on campaign finance reform, ballot access, judicial independence and poverty law. His accomplishments include organizing widespread constitutional support for state and federal campaign finance reform, plus publishing op-eds on campaign finance reform in The New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times.

Mr. Weine is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (Yeshiva University). He lives with his wife and two children in New York City.
