Comment:
The entire 'Kuhl line harken back to the days of High Quality, heavy duty build quality that made Friedrich such a respected brand. I have 2 and they are the best A/C's I have ever owned. You get what you pay for. The cheaper outsourced, [*] built Friedrich's are simply terrible. I bought an 8000 btu CP unit that was noisy and only lasted 2 seasons. My 5 year old, Texas built 12,000 BTU X-Star ($650) in 2007 is still going strong. The KUHL units are the only way to go if you care about quality and the smaller SQ units are based on the tried and true Q chassis. An all around great product.

Comment:
This is a terrible air conditioner for the money. It rattles horribly, even without the compressor running. We've had the technician out to reinstall it and we've shimmed various parts with foam, but nothing seems to help. Raindrops falling on the top of the cabinet (the enclosure around the back of the unit) sound like gunfire. <br />It is a poor performer at removing moisture from the air, too, which is something I kind of expect at some level from an A/C. Is that too much to ask?

I have been so happy with my new AC, that I was so surprised to read some negative reviews. So even though the particular model Consumer Reports reviewed was the 7,900 BTU model, I thought my experience should be relevant. I bought a Friedrich Kuhl SS14M10 14,000 BTU model, which looks just like the 7,900 model and has identical features, to replace a 13 year old Fedders 15,000 BTU which finally broke down after being repaired 3 times. It was installed by the deliverers who took an hour to remove the old AC and its shell and install the new AC. My old AC was so noisy, that it has been so wonderful to have this very much quieter AC. And since I work a varied schedule, it is so great to be able to program different schedules of times and temperatures for different days of the week, and to be able to come home to a cool house. The scheduling instructions could probably have been written more clearly, but after I went through them once, I found it easy to do. I like that you can set the fan at 4 different speeds, and that you can set the fan to be off once the desired room temperature is reached. I use this 14,000 BTU AC to cool my living room, dining room, kitchen, and 2 hallways, so I like that I have more control of the air flow thru the way you move the vents. I like having instant reads on the indoor and outdoor temperatures. And I like that this AC is so good looking, and that it also looks well constructed. Although it was more expensive than other brands with similar BTU, I am very happy with how it is performing, and with all its features which meet my needs perfectly.
