Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's
our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on air conditioner
models like the LW1212ER.
Btu/hr.:
The unit's cooling capacity, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). Capacities range from 5,000 British thermal units per hour (enough for a modest-sized bedroom) up to 12,500 Btu/hr. (adequate for a large, sun-drenched room or even two interconnected rooms).
EER:
The energy-efficiency rating, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). The higher a unit's EER, the lower its operating cost compared with other models of its size.
Min window width (in.):
The minimum and maximum window-widths into which the air conditioner will fit. If your window opening is narrower than the minimum width, the air conditioner will not fit. If your window opening is wider than the maximum width, the side panels will not cover the entire opening.
Tested Model
The Ratings of LG LW1210ER were applied to untested model LG LW1212ER, which in our judgment is enough alike in its performance, features, and specs that our test results apply to both.
LG is a national brand available in a wide variety of independent and regional appliance retailers, as well as Home Depot and PC Richards. LG also markets lower-priced window air conditioners under the Goldstar name. Window air units range in price from $150 to $500, and in Btu from 5,000 to 25,000. The brand has units that are Energy Star certified.

Remote control Much like the remotes for home-entertainment devices, these wireless devices control almost any function on the unit. They're especially useful if access to the air conditioner is limited, as when the unit is mounted through the wall at ceiling level. The remote generally works well anywhere in a room, although some may not work as well when they're used far to one side of the air conditioner.
Worst experience I have ever had with a window AC unit. Unit was properly installed. Sounds almost as loud as a freight train outside my window. Customer service is useless. I bought the unit at [@], and I have been referred to an unrelated service company which is backlogged with similar service calls for a week. LG customer service goes through too much red tape and needs to address and get to the problem.

Bought this unit to replace two existing units that I was using to cool my bedroom. Actually wanted the LW8012, but they were sold out. What's great about this unit is that it's very powerful and cools the whole room excellently! The remote control and timer mean that I don't have to get out of the bed at night to adjust or turn off the unit. The installation was a bit different for me because I was used to installing smaller units where you simply take it out of the box, put it in the window, plug it in and turn it on, voila! Well, this unit actually requires you to remove the unit from the chassis, (which as easier than it sounds) and install the chassis into the window. Again, this was different from my previous AC installation methods, so I was a bit taken aback but I figured I'd at least give it a shot, before giving up and taking it back :-). Once that's done, you mount the guide rails (I had to look at the manual online to better see the bottom guide rail installation image) and the frame curtains and then mount the chassis into the window. The process was somewhat of a pain but I must admit it was much easier to simply mount the chassis alone without the heavy unit installed. After the chassis is mounted you simply slip the unit (a bit heavy but obviously lighter without the chassis) into the chassis, screw it down and you done. I appreciated the installation method much better after it was completed!<br /> What's not so great about this AC is just that the installation can be somewhat of a pain, but not too much, other than that I have no complaints. It's quiet enough so that I can sleep, it cools the room down to the temperature that I want it to be, and I am satisfied with this purchase. Thank you CR! I would have given 5 stars but I've only had it for a few days! I'll be back if something changes.

Worst experience I have ever had with a window AC unit. Unit was properly installed by apartment building superintendent, worked for a total of 3 minutes with a load clunking sound then died. Customer service is useless. I bought the unit online through a national retailer, and I have been referred to an unrelated service company which is backlogged with similar service calls for other LG ACs for a week. Temperatures in the 90s in NYC right now. I will never buy another LG product. Never. Not a happy camper here!
