Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's
our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on air conditioner
models like the LW8011ER.
Btu/hr.:
The unit's cooling capacity, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). Capacities range from 5,000 British thermal units per hour (enough for a modest-sized bedroom) up to 12,500 Btu/hr. (adequate for a large, sun-drenched room or even two interconnected rooms).
EER:
The energy-efficiency rating, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). The higher a unit's EER, the lower its operating cost compared with other models of its size.
Min window width (in.):
The minimum and maximum window-widths into which the air conditioner will fit. If your window opening is narrower than the minimum width, the air conditioner will not fit. If your window opening is wider than the maximum width, the side panels will not cover the entire opening.
Tested Model
The Ratings of LG LW8010ER were applied to untested model LG LW8011ER, which in our judgment is enough alike in its performance, features, and specs that our test results apply to both.
LG is a national brand available in a wide variety of independent and regional appliance retailers, as well as Home Depot and PC Richards. LG also markets lower-priced window air conditioners under the Goldstar name. Window air units range in price from $150 to $500, and in Btu from 5,000 to 25,000. The brand has units that are Energy Star certified.

Remote control Much like the remotes for home-entertainment devices, these wireless devices control almost any function on the unit. They're especially useful if access to the air conditioner is limited, as when the unit is mounted through the wall at ceiling level. The remote generally works well anywhere in a room, although some may not work as well when they're used far to one side of the air conditioner.
Extremely disappointed with this unit. Purchased last summer, used in window for approximately 3 months prior to winter removal. Upon removal I found inside of chassis very well rusted. LG tells me that this is because I live in NJ and I'm close to the ocean, and that they can't cover it under warranty. I explained that I was in NW NJ, some 50+ miles from the ocean and the representative still insisted this was the problem. You would think they were joking, but they were serious.

Thought I'd try a second season out of it, I notice the unit is extremely loud and likes to rattle often. In addition, you have to push the power button several times to get the unit to turn on. Frequently other buttons such as the fan speed control don't work either. Seems to have a mind of its own.

All around a disappointing purchase, and extremely disappointing customer service.

LG should be ashamed.

Comment:
The compressor on the unit failed after 2 weeks of intermittant use. I returned it to Home Depot and the Cashier said there have been numerous returns on this unit because of failure. She said she owned last years model and has owned it for a year with no problems, but it appears that LG's quality control has gone missing. The unit was also especially loud on high. For the short time it worked it cooled the room in 90 plus temperatures outside.

Comment:
I purchased this product to replace my older A/C unit to cool our bedroom. For noise level it is loud but quieter than other models I listened to. This unit does a good job cooling our room on the second floor during those 97 degree days. I do not like the styrofoam on the inside and expect that will break quickly this fall when it is time to clean the unit. For longevity this does not seem like the best material to use in my opinion.
