Consumer Reports recommends that you match the features on a model to the needs you have. Here's our take on some of the specifications and features that are commonly available on air conditioner models like the AF-S80RX (Costco).

Btu/hr.:
The unit's cooling capacity, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). Capacities range from 5,000 British thermal units per hour (enough for a modest-sized bedroom) up to 12,500 Btu/hr. (adequate for a large, sun-drenched room or even two interconnected rooms).

EER:
The energy-efficiency rating, as supplied by the manufacturer (and as certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, AHAM, unless otherwise noted in the Recommendations & Notes). The higher a unit's EER, the lower its operating cost compared with other models of its size.

Min window width (in.):
The minimum and maximum window-widths into which the air conditioner will fit. If your window opening is narrower than the minimum width, the air conditioner will not fit. If your window opening is wider than the maximum width, the side panels will not cover the entire opening.

230 sq foot sunny room
Comment:
The room this was purchased to cool is 230 sq. foot, containing many lights and multiple computer/tv electronics, with fully exposed westward windows that bear direct sunlight for half the day. We purchased this model because our previous Kenmore model was just absurdly loud. Noise level was the primary thing we were looking for in an 8k BTU AC unit, and based on CR's low-fan noise ratings we went with this model.

There are three fan settings. The low setting, which has so far sufficed to cool the room well throughout the day, is relatively unobtrusive. The med and high settings are relatively loud. Low is not whisper quiet, but to offer an unscientific measure which might help someone get a relative sense of the noise level: with the AC off we watch TV on volume level 15 out of 100; with this Sharp AC cooling on low we watch TV on 25 out of 100; with our previous Kenmore AC on low we had to watch with the volume on 55 out of 100. Another indication of the low fan noise level is that when the compressor comes on, the overall noise level barely raises. Overall, having purchased this model primarily so that we could watch TV and relax in this room without suffering a jet engine in the window, I'm pleased. Cooling is quick and thorough so far, but we've only had mid-80s temps so far, with moderate humidity, so the mid-summer test has yet to come. Based on everything else, though, I assume the unit will do fine under load.

Other: The unit seems smartly made; feels solid; felt lighter than anticipated; was easy to install for this 40 year old man.

There is one minor issue to note: the interior of the model involves styrofoam molding, which the fan occasionally swiped during the first day of running, emitting the faintest clipping noise. The noise appears to have vanished suggesting that the unit has broken in a bit, and/or the fan has perhaps shaved away the foam it was encountering. In any case at this point the noise is gone.

Overall, the unit is acceptably quiet on low, cools and dehumidifies nicely, and at this early stage seems to live up to CR's rating. In any case it's worlds better than the Kenmore nightmare it's replacing.
