Reset Temp When Away
Comment:
We wavered between the Nest and the Ecobee. Glad we chose the Ecobee. Installed on a Lennox HVAC system. Managing settings is very responsive. We have never had issues with connectivity to the thermostat or the Ecobee web site. Shows energy use, and is exportable to Excel. It is easier to use the phone app then to actually us the touch thermostat. Would highly recommend.

Cons
Best Uses

Maximize Efficiency
Comment:
I have 2 of these installed in my house operating my geothermal heat pump HVAC system (1 upstairs, 1 downstairs). This replaced the Honeywell Prestige HD series that the HVAC contractor gave me. I replaced it because I wanted to maximize my efficiency by utilization Stage 2 ONLY when absolutely necessary. In my system Stage 1 cooling is 40% more efficient than Stage 2 cooling. It was easy to install (I did it myself), and easy to setup. I can operate the thermostat from anywhere! No more leaving the house and forgetting to adjust the thermostat! The web interface is great too with lots of information, although the Home IQ could still use some refinement.

After showing this to my HVAC contractor, he was convinced and became a dealer!

I have been using the Ecobee Smart Thermostat for months. Installation could be difficult for people who are unfamiliar with low voltage control wiring especially if you have two-stage heating/cooling equipment. Just be sure to read the instructions carefully, they include diagrams for all typical equipment types, even two-stage.

The information available via the website is very useful in helping determine how well the system is operating. Though I do wish they would ask what is the btu rating for the heating/cooling equipment in order to determine comparable efficiency. The information in the reports can be very valuable to an HVAC person diagnosing a problem with the system.

I am an HVAC technician by trade. I have used many thermostats by different makers. Generally we use Honeywell or Aprilaire thermostats but we use others as well in Home Automation systems. I love all the data available online as well as the ease of use of the Ecobee. This thermostat can do everything a basic thermostat can do with multi-stage equipment and more. It can additionally control a humidifier, ventilation, etc. We are in the process of replacing our non-WiFi Honeywell thermostats at our church with Ecobee Smart EMS thermostats... the commercial equivalent of this thermostat.

A bonus feature of this thermostat is the ability to set various alerts. The most obvious use of this feature is to alert you if the temperature drops below a pre-defined point. As an example you could set an alert at 45*F so you would be alerted if there was a problem with the heat during the winter and you would be notified via email.
