About - Hamilton Beach The Scoop Two-Way Brewer 49980

The Hamilton Beach The Scoop Two-Way Brewer 49980 is part of the coffeemaker test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, drip coffeemaker models like the The Scoop Two-Way Brewer 49980 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Brew performance:
The ability to reach 195° to 205° F for five or six minutes, the industry standard for optimal brewing.

Convenience:
Reflects ease of filling the reservoir, placing the filter, gauging the amount of coffee remaining, and cleaning up. It also reflects how clear we judged the controls.

Carafe handling:
Covers handle comfort, tendency to drip while pouring, balance of a full carafe, and how easy it was to empty the last liquid. Models with no score here brew into single-serve cups or are brew-and-dispense models. The latter hold the coffee in a tank; you fill your cup by pressing it against the dispenser lever.

We aren't coffee aficionados but drink it every day. This coffeemaker was good when it worked but just over a year after purchase (today), it quit.

One reason I bought it was for the option to brew a single cup. We didn't use that option often but it was nice to have and worked well. Too bad it used Senseo packets which are hard to find but since you could use your own coffee, that wasn't a big deal.

I never used the thermal mug that came with it as it was obviously low quality: the lid didn't fit at all tight so it was apparent it might come loose when tipped and probably wouldn't keep coffee overly hot.

Hamilton Beach Customer Service was good. A couple months after we bought the product, the button on the filter basket that allows Pause and Serve came off. I contacted the company, which wanted me to send the whole unit back in. When I said all I wanted was the basket, which at the moment was out of stock, and I was willing to wait for it, Customer Service waived the shipping fee for the replacement. While I don't see why I should have to pay to ship a replacement for something under warranty, it seems common practice so I was happy to have it waived. The only complaint I have about the customer service is that I had to check back to see that the basket was in stock and initiate its shipment.

Overall we were happy with this unit while it worked. However, its short life negated that positive experience.

I use the mug feature daily and the carafe for multiple servings, which is infrequent. I purchased this model to have both options in one unit. However, the single serve option has been disappointing as compared to my last mug server. Coffee grounds spill into the mug and upward onto the brewing mechanism, if more than 2 scoops are used and water spits out onto the counter if you use a full mug of water. It requires alot of daily upkeep for one cup of coffee. So, if you like your coffee flavorful, you must use less water with the 2 scoops. Surely you can use the carafe daily to brew a larger volume, however that defeats the convenience of the mug. I had hoped the availabilty of pods would add to convenience but the limited choices are not very tastey.
Coffee made in the carafe is very enjoyable.

I'm an everyday coffee-snob. That being said, I grind my own and despise starbucks. I appriciate the option of either a pot or cup to go. I tend to have coffe over an entire morning or afternoon, depending on how I'm working, so the decreased temp does not bother me because it tends not to burn it. Overall, so far so good. Lets see how long it lasts.

Strength
chose between single mug size or 12 cup using any brand of coffee
Weakness
none so far
this is easy to use and coffee is hot-plus those new single brew coffees too expensive, and tassimo doesnt make anything but limited versions which yuban and maxwell house not much of a choice. I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond and with 20% off coupon, was about 55 bucks.
