About - Kalorik TKM-20208

The Kalorik TKM-20208 is part of the coffeemaker test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, drip coffeemaker models like the TKM-20208 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Brew performance:
The ability to reach 195° to 205° F for five or six minutes, the industry standard for optimal brewing.

Convenience:
Reflects ease of filling the reservoir, placing the filter, gauging the amount of coffee remaining, and cleaning up. It also reflects how clear we judged the controls.

Carafe handling:
Covers handle comfort, tendency to drip while pouring, balance of a full carafe, and how easy it was to empty the last liquid. Models with no score here brew into single-serve cups or are brew-and-dispense models. The latter hold the coffee in a tank; you fill your cup by pressing it against the dispenser lever.

Comment:
I used this pot to brew my coffee, which I like very hot, every morning. The thermal pot didn't keep my coffee warm enough for the 30 minutes it usually takes me to finish breakfast, even when I pre-heated the pot before I brewed the coffee.<br />Pouring a cup of coffee was very awkward: You have to pull the pot out of the tight space where it sits, partly unscrew the lid, which is very tight also, pour the coffee, re-screw the lid and fit the pot back in its tight space.

Comment:
I'm a daily user of this machine. I have owned many coffee machines in my life, and either still have them chugging along, or else some plastic piece broke off, making a machine useless. However, this is the first machine I have ever had that quit working after less than two years of use due to some electrical issue effecting the heating element. A little upsetting, considering it was probably the first machine I purchased based on a CR review. In addition, as others have stated, its pouring spout redirects and spills coffee regularly, and cleaning it requires wearing thick gloves, because you will otherwise cut your bare hand on the razor sharp plastic sides of the carafe as you clean the inside. On the plus side, while it lasted, it brewed fast and hot and the carafe kept the coffee hot for a long time without help from the heating plate.

Comment:
Bought this on CR's recommendation - what a disappointment! Doubt CR ever tried to pour from the carafe as it is impossible without dripping coffee all over everything. First unit quit brewing within 2 months. Kalorik customer service is less than helpful. Ended up exchanging at place of purchase. With current unit sometimes you turn it on and nothing or only a partial pot brews. Carafe is also hard to clean inside.
