About - InSinkErator Evolution Excel

The InSinkErator Evolution Excel is part of the garbage disposer test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, garbage disposer models like the Evolution Excel are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Speed:
We judged each model's speed of grinding beef bones and vegetable scraps. The speed of grind was based on the amount of bone that was ground in one minute of operation.

Fineness:
We judged each model's fineness of grinding beef bones and vegetable scraps. The fineness of grind was based on the distribution of particle size after all bones were ground to completion.

Vegetable scraps:
For vegetable scraps, whole celery stalks and whole potatoes were used.

Don't believe the hype

I suppose it's quieter than most, but it's not as quiet as it is made out to be by the brochure, ads and other hype. It had a problem with banana peels, of all things -- wouldn't completely digest them. As for chicken bones, forget it! Unit doesn't jam, but it does overheat and shut off; then you have to wait til it cools so it will resume doing its job. I called customer service three times, and gradually learned from them how to deal with the unit's eccentricities. Turn the disposer on first (with water running) BEFORE putting ANY food into the disposer. Also, a light stream of water is all that's needed -- with a heavy stream the food just floats around inside the unit and doesn't come in full contact with the chopping mechanism (that was my problem with the banana peels). The instruction manual could have been more informative on these points and saved me a couple of months of angst. I have not had any problems since operating the unit with these lessons learned, but I still do not and will not try chicken bones (a capability over-hyped by the literature and ads). All in all, I believe a less expensive model would have served the purpose just as well (but not the LEAST expensive models -- those truly puroduce more noise than anyone should have to endure).

The Evolution Excel has 1 HP per the box and their web site. I do not see a 3/4 HP unit even offered on this model, so CR seems to have a error.

I installed it on an Elkay Perfect Drain Sink, which has a flange made for InSinkErator units. Works well, quick work.

The unit is very quiet, which is why I bought it. I was willing to trade speed for quiet. But I'm happy to say it takes things as fast as I feed it. No complaints.
The stainless body reflects some light under the cabinet. For the price, an LED lamp would be better.

Comment:
Installed this 3 years ago and it worked perfectly until yesterday when it suddenly quit. It could not be unjammed. I suspect that this was a bearing failure as the only items the disposal was processing at the time were black beans. Inquired about 7 yr warranty and discovered that it only covers manufacturing defects, and these are determined by the service technician. If no manufacturing defect is found, the owner must pay for the service charge and labor, as well as the replacement unit, so it seems that the warranty period of 7 years is really of limited value and the owner is at financial risk in even trying to pursue warranty coverage. Perhaps my reasoning was wrong, but it seemed to me that it would be unlikely to find a manufacturing defect in an appliance that had functioned well for three years. Nonetheless, I purchased the same model (now $20 more than 3 years ago) since I was so pleased with its performance during the time that it functioned. I am hoping that this unit lasts several times longer than the last. Would have given it 5 stars two days ago.
