About - GE JB705STSS

The GE JB705STSS is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric range models like the JB705STSS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful element could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3 quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the ability of the lowest power element to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful element to its lowest setting to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
We just replaced a 10 yr Whirlpool range with this GE unit after the Whirlpool began inconsistent heating/baking. My wife spends a lot of time in the kitchen due to the strict diet requirements of the SCD diet I am following for Crohn's Disease. My son and I also cook and all three of us love this range! You can see what we like best under the Pros section above. The only thing we would consider a 'con' is the warming drawer at the bottom as we would prefer a larger storage tray instead for all of our stainless pots and pans. We are overcoming that by storing elsewhere though. RE: the odor from the insulation layer applied at the factory, this fact is mentioned on a Q/A sheet supplied and recommends a self cleaning cycle to quickly burn that off. We noticed the smell at first use of the oven but it really wasn't that bad and appears to lesson with each use. We have not run the self cleaning cycle yet and don't necessarily plan on it. While GE has not had necessarily good ratings in the past for some applicances like refrigerators, it looks like they do make a solid range. I feel really good about this purchase and highly recommend this unit!

A month or less
Bottom Line
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

bad smell

Strength
good features for the price
Weakness
noxious odor at first
This range has a lot of fine features and seems well built. Unfortunately, GE ships it with some sort of acrylic binder on its oven fiberglass insulation that has to burn off with the first few uses. The smell from this burning is nasty, and probably toxic. GE recommends that you self-clean the oven to get rid of the smell, and open the windows. So dont buy one in the winter. Im left with the feeling that GE cares little for the health and well-being of its customers - all they would have to do is plug in and run the unit at the factory (preferably outside) yet they dont do this.
