About - GE JSP42DNWW

The GE JSP42DNWW is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric range models like the JSP42DNWW are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful element could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3 quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the ability of the lowest power element to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful element to its lowest setting to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
This range was purchased July 2010. Since I live alone and do not bake often, I didn't notice the inconsistency of the oven temperature. Until Thanksgiving of 2013. The turkey was overcooked in just two hours - not good. The stove top got into the action and it took an hour for the gravy to thicken. Three service calls in December and close to $400 in parts, it worked well through the Holiday. Now a month later, it is totally dead. I'm glad I purchased the 5 year warranty as it appears I will need it. Would not recommend to anyone.

Comment:
Purchased new at [...] Unfortunately we picked this unit to match our white cabinets and dark granite top - needed a flat top for island. Horrible range! Power boil doesn't. It takes 30 minutes or more to start boiling water. Oven temp is WAY off and increasing the temp to get it correct doesn't work. Signals 'at temp' sound when still 50-75 degrees shy and then if you increase the temp to correct it, it stabilizes for about 20 minutes and then shoots to the higher temp! You should try cooking a turkey in this thing - talk about flying blind. Fan makes high pitched squealing noise when heating up and then runs (quietly but you can hear it in the next room!) for hours when cooling down. Should have kept the 15 year old unit that was here already - it worked MUCH better. Will NEVER buy for aesthetics again and will NEVER own another GE range after this experience!
