About - Maytag MIR8890AS

The Maytag MIR8890AS is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric range models like the MIR8890AS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful element could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3 quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the ability of the lowest power element to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful element to its lowest setting to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
We purchased on April 10, delivery April 16, loud bang on April 28 and it hasn't worked since. Service provider arrived quickly and identified the induction module as totally inoperative. Parts ordered but here we are on May 16 cooking on a 32 year old liquid fuel Coleman stove and wondering why we spent a few bucks short of $2,000 for something to store our kitchenware in. Waste of money. Do not purchase this appliance unless you have an alternative means of cooking your meals.

No Christmas Dinner thanks to Maytag
12/24/2012
Strength
The quick boil and slow melt features are veryhandy, it is a nice looking stove
Weakness
Unreliable, keeps breaking-down when in use, repair parts are slow arriving, seems like a lemon,
Well, it is Christmas Eve and our 6 month old Maytag Induction Stove has broken down... again... not sure how we are going to cook the Family Dinner for all the relatives coming over tonight. We bought the stove in the summer and within a few weeks it broke down, the circuit board for the stove top failed (took three weeks to get it fixed) and now it happens again after only a few weeks since the last repair. The same problem has happened again, while we were roasting vegetables at 400 the cooktop locked-up and the alarm went-off. Seems to be a design flaw that this problem keeps re-occurring. Called Maytag, again, they will be sending out a repair person but it will be a week before the person even gets here and then who knows how long before the repair parts arrive and we have a functioning stove. So far this nice looking stove is looking more like a lemon. I cannot see any reason for a stove to break-down roasting at 400 for only 15 minutes. Maytag denies that there is any design flaw but this problem has happened twice in the first 6 months of use so I cant say I have much faith in this product. I will update this review once the wait for repairs is over but for now the holidays here are going to be tricky without a reliable stove in the kitchen :(
