About - Maytag MIR8890AS

The Maytag MIR8890AS is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric range models like the MIR8890AS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful element could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3 quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects how well the lowest-powered element or burner kept a low temperature as for melting chocolate. We also set the most powerful element to its lowest setting to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
Here's what's great:
** the induction is faster than gas, and safer than radiant (it's the pan that heats, not the cooktop).
** very large oven cavity and window
** nice design

Here's what disappoints:
** electronics for cooktop replaced twice.
** electronics for oven replaced twice, and STILL not functioning. It's a programming error that Maytag has not resolved. For example:
----- convection stops at temps above 400. Even after control board replaced and new convection assembly installed.
----- delay cook feature doesn't work, even when following instruction booklet step-by-step

The technology for induction and convection are not new. Maytag manages to get it wrong, and charges a premium price for it.

Comment:
We purchased on April 10, delivery April 16, loud bang on April 28 and it hasn't worked since. Service provider arrived quickly and identified the induction module as totally inoperative. Parts ordered but here we are on May 16 cooking on a 32 year old liquid fuel Coleman stove and wondering why we spent a few bucks short of $2,000 for something to store our kitchenware in. Waste of money. Do not purchase this appliance unless you have an alternative means of cooking your meals.
