About - Whirlpool GFE461LV[Q]

The Whirlpool GFE461LV[Q] is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric range models like the GFE461LV[Q] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful element could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3 quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the ability of the lowest power element to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful element to its lowest setting to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
We thought we would pay more and get quality. Wrong! We bought it in October 2009 and within the 2nd year (after the one year warranty period) it started malfunctioning. It was the circuit board which basically means you have to buy a new stove because it is about $700 to replace the part and then installation fees. The oven will suddenly just shut down so if you are cooking something like pastry or a roast you likely will not notice until it is too late and your dinner party is ruined. Be prepared to go out for dinner. Apparently the repairman has had numerous similar incidents and yet Whirlpool says there is no product recall or issue. I was very disappointed in the company's response. They could at least offer a goodwill discount or anything apart from writing a letter to Corporate Executive office. The extended warranty was very expensive but I wish I had bought it although you would never expect a stove to have such a short life-span. Also, the quality, for instance, the bottom drawer is so poorly designed. It is very frustrating to use it as it moves crookedly and jams every time you use it. I can't understand how they could not see this design problem. I would warn people seriously about this product. The company should correct the design.

I purchased this stove in June 2011. It was not put into use until August. Just after the one year warranty expired, one of the back burners doesn't work. I contacted Whirlpool's customer service, and they were not willing to help at all. Now I'm stuck with a broken stove that will cost me over $250.00 to fix, and it has under one year of use.

Comment:
This model replaces an older one in our home. We have a small kitchen, and with only two people to cook for most of the time, we don't need top-of-the-line appliances. This range caught my eye in the store because of the 12 burner and the warming zone. I actually got more features than I wanted at a really modest price. I love the way the two front dual-zone burners let me match to pan size. I became addicted to the keep-warm zone on the old model, and I know I would not be happy without one. The added benefit of the keep-warm function in the oven is even better. The timer delayed self-cleaning feature, the quick steam-cleaning option and convection baking are all bonus items. The only negative with this new model is that the stove top elements take a little bit longer to warm up. Otherwise, I'd give it 5 stars.
