About - GE Cafe C2S985SETSS

The GE Cafe C2S985SETSS is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, gas range models like the Cafe C2S985SETSS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful burner could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3-quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This how well the lowest-powered element or burner kept a low temperature as for melting chocolate. We also set the most powerful burner to its lowest flame to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
We looked a long time before purchasing this range. We loved everything about it and still do. We did have a major problem with a noisy ventilation fan. After four service calls and one fan replacement, we had resigned ourselves to putting up with the noise because we loved everything else about the range. Recently a friend bought the same model, and her fan was not noisy. I contacted GE to see if they had redesigned the range to eliminate the problem. They sent a technician out, and he replaced the fan again. In doing so, he wired the new fan in the way the old one was wired. When testing the fan, he realized it was wired in backwards! He reversed the wiring, and no more noise! What was happening was the fan was running on high during normal baking. It normally only runs on high during self clean or when using very high temperatures. I am so happy! The fan noise absolutely drove us crazy. Now it is so quiet. It must have been wired wrong from the factory, and none of the technicians who came previously realized the problem. They just kept saying, it is the design, and there is nothing else we can do. So, if you have this problem, this is your solution. I just wish it had been discovered two years ago! The only other thing I will say is that I did have to adjust the oven temperature and change the automatic convection adjustment of temperature (I never bake at a lower temperature on convection.) There are instructions in the booklet to do this. I do feel that this should not be necessary, but I was able to do it easily.

Comment:
This ranges replaces a pricey Dacor dual fuel that only lasted 9 yrs. I was concerned about lots of online reports of fan noise but find it is fine-typical of convection, no more no less. I had the store plug it in and I ran it at the showroom to make sure. It bakes very well-I would rate it higher than CR for baking. Far better than the Dacor convection dual fuel it replaced. Cooktop good-simmer burner excellent. Griddle is too small for family fare but works well. Big oven capacity-plenty of room for a big turkey and well lit interior. Soft SS cooktop-use care. Front/door SS is tougher. Large window nice touch-can see baking progress well. Meat probe is excellent and spot on.
