About - GE Cafe CGS985SETSS

The GE Cafe CGS985SETSS is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, gas range models like the Cafe CGS985SETSS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful burner could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3-quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the gentlest burner's ability to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful burner to its lowest flame to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
Our previous range was a G.E which we had for 20 yrs.It was the top of the line at the time and besides rusted parts and broken knobs it performed well.It never gave out on us but we were disappointed with the overall appearance.Despite that fact we replaced it with the GE Cafe.Again we were looking for something at the top of line but this one has proven to be problematic. There is always a smell of gas on opening the oven door for which I had a technician check it out and he said that no leakage was found. That cost us $100.00.Also there is this awful recurrent noise when using the convection bake feature and the self cleaning feature of the oven is just a total waste of gas.It does remove the major stains but that's it, so I'm stuck with a partly dirty oven.Add to that, the indicator light for the lower oven has fallen out. It's such a shame because the range is really beautiful in appearance has great features but falls far short of our expectation.

Comment:
This is as close as I could get to a pro model in a 30 inch range. We have enjoyed it for about three years. It is easy to keep clean if you get after spills quickly and don't let them burn into the stainless steel.

Comment:
Oven would not heat after two years of service and GE service contract repairman took three trip to repair. Blamed my home wiring when the problem was faulting wiring at manufacture which finally shorted out. The microwave electronics failed after 14 months and cost $570 to replace. <br />Will never purchase a GE product again.
