About - GE Cafe CGS985SETSS

The GE Cafe CGS985SETSS is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, gas range models like the Cafe CGS985SETSS are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful burner could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3-quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the gentlest burner's ability to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful burner to its lowest flame to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

I love the look of this appliance I'm just disappointed in the smell of gas from the oven! Had the repair man out and he thought it might need an adjustment but had to check with GE before any changes are done. I don't like the idea of breathing gas!

The varying burners allow you to simmer and heat things up quickly. I haven't used a gas stove in many years and you do need to adjust your cooking a little. I found the handles on the pots get hot quickly so be careful not to put the burner on too high. I find it's best to clean spills up quickly so as not to let them burn into the stainless steel. Large spacious oven with the option to use the lower small oven is great if you make something small and it cooks quicker.
- the griddle is great and is easy to clean
Cons:
- the stainless steel top will tarnish and does scratch easily but I think that applies to any stainless steel tops that you purchase.
- the control panel is very sensitive and it's easy to switch off the stove without realizing, so do keep an eye out of this (it does beep to warn you).

Comment:
Our previous range was a G.E which we had for 20 yrs.It was the top of the line at the time and besides rusted parts and broken knobs it performed well.It never gave out on us but we were disappointed with the overall appearance.Despite that fact we replaced it with the GE Cafe.Again we were looking for something at the top of line but this one has proven to be problematic. There is always a smell of gas on opening the oven door for which I had a technician check it out and he said that no leakage was found. That cost us $100.00.Also there is this awful recurrent noise when using the convection bake feature and the self cleaning feature of the oven is just a total waste of gas.It does remove the major stains but that's it, so I'm stuck with a partly dirty oven.Add to that, the indicator light for the lower oven has fallen out. It's such a shame because the range is really beautiful in appearance has great features but falls far short of our expectation.
