About - Kenmore 72903

The Kenmore 72903 is part of the kitchen range test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, gas range models like the 72903 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cooktop high:
This reflects how quickly the most powerful burner could raise a 6-liter (6 1/3-quart) pot of water from room temperature to a near boil.

Cooktop low:
This reflects the gentlest burner's ability to melt and hold chocolate without scorching it. We also set the most powerful burner to its lowest flame to test its ability to hold a large pot of tomato sauce below a boil.

Baking:
This reflects the evenness of cookies and cakes in multi-rack baking tests.

Comment:
I bought this oven just over a year ago from [@]. The oven worked great. I was not disappointed at all with it's performance. All my food cooked evenly, and it was great for baking. It was a pain to keep clean though, as every little streak showed. A few months after buying the oven I noticed streaks in between the glass on the oven door. The only way to get at the streaks to clean them would be take apart the door which I was not comfortable doing. I was very disappointed that somehow something managed to leak in between these panels. Shouldn't there be some insulation that prevents this? In my opinion, this is a design flaw. More recently, a few weeks ago after baking something, I attemped to turn the oven off by hitting the Stop button. The button was unresponsive, and the oven would not turn off. I finally had to reset the breaker to get the oven to turn off. It appears that a few of the buttons on the digital panel have stopped working. This is unacceptable for a product that is only a year old. On top of that, it is out of warranty by 10 days, so I am [*]. A warranty of only one year on a major appliance such as this? It's pathetic. Now I am stuck paying for repairs.

Comment:
I've had this range for almost 3 years and I love it. I've done a lot of baking, not too much broiling but what I have done is fine. The power burner is great both for high-heat stir-fry or browning meat and for boiling large pots of water for pasta. When I was looking for a new oven, I did look at the GE and didn't like how far away the grate was from the burners, and I didn't really like the double-oven feature. I got this Kenmore, which had all the features I wanted and none of the features I didn't want, and it was a great deal for the price. I've been really happy with it. The self-cleaning feature is great. The black top part is a little hard to keep clean, though that would be true of any brand, but at least everything comes apart really easily for cleaning. I use the griddle all the time, for tortillas, grilled sandwiches, etc., and the power burner as well. Sears has great customer service. When I first got it I called them to check the temperature; it turned out my thermometer (one of those little 5-dollar ones) was pretty far off & not worth keeping. I have used the warming drawer once for actual warming, and it worked really well, but most of the time I just use the drawer for storage. One of the best features is the convection. I use it for roasting & some baking and it speeds up cooking and saves energy. I can't think of anything I would change about the performance of this oven. I notice more & more how far CR's ratings are from the reviews of actual users, and this is one of those times. I've started reading CR's test results but going to review websites or [@] comments on products to get a better idea what actual users think of a product.

Comment:
We have not had the range that long but we love it. We've definitely put it through the paces though. Functionally, the oblong burner in the center is great for a griddle and a welcome addition from our previous range. The controls are precise and user friendly. Also, we have small children at home and appreciate the locking mechanism controlled by the console. It's not the best at broiling, but for the price we're very happy.
