The Whirlpool WMH31017A[S] is part of the microwave oven
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, over-the-range microwave oven
models like the WMH31017A[S] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
This reflects how evenly a model reheated a dish of cold mashed potatoes.
This is based on how well the automatic-defrost program defrosted one pound of frozen ground chuck.
Speed of heating:
This score is based on the temperature rise of water heated in the microwave.
About This Brand
Whirlpool's over-the-range microwaves feature what the company calls the Velos design, a venting system that removes smoke better than any other over-the-range model we've tested. The company also sells convection and nonconvection microwaves, some with speed-cooking capability. The ovens are sold at most major retailers and cost $300 to $800.

Watts This is the manufacturer's figure of the microwave power output. In general, the more watts an oven offers, the greater its cooking power-and the faster your food will be cooked. That said, differences in claimed wattage of 100 watts or less are unlikely to result in significant differences in performance.

Convection mode A few microwaves include a convection oven feature, which has a heating element and a fan that distributes heat. In convection mode, you can set the oven temperature as you would in a traditional oven to bake or roast items.
Sensor Controls the cooking and reheating time automatically. It shuts off an oven when it determines (usually by sensing steam) that food is hot enough.
Stainless/SS-look option Stainless-steel is stylish, but it shows fingerprints. Another option: a vinyl-covered metal finish that gives you a stainless-steel look but resists smudging.
This model was installed by our builder in our new home. I wish we had done a little research and requested a better model - the price differences are so slight, it would have been well worth it to upgrade. After only a year and a half in our new home, this microwave stopped heating up the food. It turns on and looks like it's running, but nothing heats up. It's a piece of junk. Clearly the builders go bottom of the barrel - but don't follow their bad example... you can definitely get a better machine with a different brand even in the same price range.

Works good for me

So far this microwave has performed great! It heats evenly and is easy to use. I like the separate timer you can use for other things around the kitchen.<br />The exhaust fan is not as load as the samsung I had but it is still loud. Overall a very good microwave.

I cook and re-heat in my microwave daily. I bought this unit in stainless steel and in less than 24 months it shorted out twice. The second time it fried the electrical panel completely. I thought I was getting a better quality with the gold series but I was wrong. Worked great when it worked but twice down in 24 months does not speak well for Whirlpool. I won't be going that route again.
