About - Amana AFI2538AE[W]

The Amana AFI2538AE[W] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the AFI2538AE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
We have owned this refirgerator for 3 years, 8 months. It was our first bottom-freezer, and we loved it! So easy to access everything, great water and ice dispenser, handy pantry cabinet, flexible shelving, did a great job keeping everything cold. The icemaker was noisy, but that was okay UNTIL...

IT DIED. At the tender age of 3-1/2 years. Three different repair techs said it can't be fixed. And the one-year warranty is all you get. Whatever you hear, there are NO MORE FIVE-YEAR SEALED-SYSTEM WARRANTIES. Whirlpool/Amana/Maytag/KitchenAid stopped doing those around 2006.

As another reviewer has mentioned, the condenser tube sprung a leak (freon), then water got sucked into it from the defrost pan and it corroded. Whether I actually believe the corrosion part is another question; it was the extended warranty rep that told me that. Corrosion isn't covered under the Assurant-backed extended warranty, you see. At least they say they'll refund me the $299 warranty price. :P

A good refrigerator that only lasts 3 years, is NOT A GOOD REFRIGERATOR. IT IS A HORRIBLE, AWFUL, RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE REFRIGERATOR.

Sorry to go all-caps on you, but that part must stand out. AMANA FAILED WITH THIS PRODUCT. And I am now looking elsewhere for my next fridge. Hopefully it will last at least FOUR years.

Refrigerator failed just after warranty was up (13 months) and agin just this past weekend. Repair tech said all made in China. Was told to expect 4 to 5 years before it becomes too expensive to fix

Comment:
I'll start by saying, for the money, I expected a much more reliable refrigerator and better customer service. I had mine for almost 2 years now. It works fine, but, the ice maker which was very nice to have, stopped working after about a year. Amana will not cover the repair, just out of warranty for that. The Chef's drawer is terrific...except the drawer lid keeps coming off. Again, out of warranty. Beautiful design and looks great, but not sufficient door space. I guess I should have researched this item better. Very disappointed in the customer service.

Not what I was expecting.

Strength
Big. Like the freezer on the bottom. Adjustable split shelves.
Weakness
Doesn't seem sturdy. It has that molded plastically feel. Doesn't offer crushed ice.
Maybe the plastic is some kind of new super sturdy lightweight material, but it seems to me they may have just cut corners. For this kind of money, I would not expect any corner cutting. e.g. why not offer crushed ice? My old refrigerator (a maytag) is 15 years old and it just seems sturdier - i have to keep double checking this one to make sure the door closed completely. (the old one still runs fine, we needed a 2nd refrigerator for the garage and decided to get a nice new one and move the old one into the garage).

Its a winner!

Strength
Quiet, lots of room and adjustable shelves, plenty of ice for family of 4, easy to use control panel.
Weakness
doors will sometimes not close completely without a push. thankfully there is an alarm that sounds/beeps if the doors remain open.
This is a great appliance. We have been looking for an ice and water dispenser in the door that did not take away too much room from the inside and still had the deli drawer. This is it and we are very pleased.
