About - GE GBSC0HBX[WW]

The GE GBSC0HBX[WW] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the GBSC0HBX[WW] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
Shortly after the refrigerator was installed, the freezer door handle came off on one side. The tech claimed that the handle wasn't properly aligned, however, this has happened multiple times in the almost 4 years I have owned it. I have learned to deal with it by adjusting the handle when it gets loose. In addition the freezer is one big compartment with a tiny pull out shelf to hold butter or similar small items. Very hard to locate items without taking multiple things out. Ice maker is noisy.

In looking at newer models, I see that shelves or bins have been added to the bottom freezers, but I noticed on a couple of models that the handle was loose.

The other issue I have is that the refrigerator door swings wide and you have to hold on to it or it will bump into the cabinets. The refrigerator interior is roomy and the bins and shelving can be adjusted.

After reading the reviews, I've come to the conclusion that the newer models have nice features, but the problem of consistent performance still exists.

Comment:
We purchased this based on reviews, the want for a bottom freezer and space width limitation. Overall it is okay but the temperature in the refrigerator section is difficult to regulate. Cans on top are cold yet salad bags, etc on bottom in compartments tend to freeze. The freezer door needs to be closed with more force than normal to ensure it closes. The door has been open on a few occasions. Refrigerator section shelving arrangement is limited.

Comment:
We purchased a Moffat bottom freezer fridge which is made by GE and is very similar to this model. Luckily we got a good deal because this fridge is a peice of junk!. The produce in the bottom of the fridge or anything else that you place there freezes no matter what the temperature is set at. This fridge is just over a year old and not covered by the warranty anymore.NOT impressed with GE
