About - Kenmore 7809[2]

The Kenmore 7809[2] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the 7809[2] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
Have had it for 7 years, ice-maker re-fill tube constantly freezes up and stops making ice. When this happens, the water spews out the back every time the ice-maker tries to re-start, causing huge puddles of water in the back and under the fridge. It has virtually ruined the floor and wall under and behind it. Repairs cost $350 to $400 through Sears repair service and involves replacing the water valves and/or hoses and fittings. Also the freezer door gasket had to be replaced because it split open when my wife tried to clean a spill off of it. The freezer door and basket do not slide out very smoothly. Water filters are rather expensive to replace. Makes a lot of weird noises, which the owners manual claims are just normal operating sounds.
