The Maytag MBF1958XE[W] is part of the refrigerator
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator
models like the MBF1958XE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.
About This Brand
One of the Whirlpool brands, Maytag is a major player in the bottom-freezer section of the market. The company was one of the first to introduce a French-door model with an external ice-and-water dispenser and a cabinet-depth model with an external dispenser.
Claimed capacity (cu. ft.) Claimed capacity is the manufacturer's estimate of the volume, in cubic feet, of interior space.
Claimed capacity (cu. ft.)
Cabinet-depth model Cabinet-depth models usually measure 27 to 28 inches deep, not quite flush with the cabinets, but at least three inches shallower than many standard 36-inch-wide models. You can get models with stainless exteriors or panel kits.
French-door style French door models are bottom-freezer refrigerators whose upper compartments have two narrow doors that open similarly to the doors of a side-by-side refrigerator. These narrower doors use less space in front of the refrigerator when opened, and allow access to either or both sides of the full-width fresh-food compartment. Typically more expensive, French-door models are usually 36 inches wide, though some newer models are 33 inches wide.
Water dispenser It is normally located in the fresh food compartment.
Stainless/SS-look option Stainless steel is stylish but it shows fingerprints. Another option: a vinyl-covered metal finish that gives you a stainless-steel look but resists smudging.
Bought DEc 2012. Installed january 2013. Compressor died June 2014. I HAD extended warranty so it was covered but it took MAYTAG repair service almost 2 weeks to come out. TWO WEEKS!

Great cooling temperature
Holds Temperature Well
Space For Tall Items
Limited Freezer Room
I bought this fridge to replace a 17 year old Whirlpool that was white. I wanted a stainless steel fridge. I read the reviews for this fridge on Consumer Reports and chose it based on that plus a few other reviews that I read. I use this fridge daily as it's the only source of refrigeration in my home. It's used for breakfast, dinner, and supper and snacks in between. There are several things I love about this machine. It looks beautiful in my kitchen. It is very easy to access the fridge part where it is on top. I find the fridge keeps the food at a consistent cold level. My old fridge was more prone to freezer burn. This one keeps food frozen but does not burn meats as quickly. I have not had any freezer burn yet, but I'm sure if you left anything in a freezer long enough it would dehydrate over time. Both the freezer and fridge have lights which makes it really easy to see and find items. The inside fridge door has lots of shelves.

One thing that really bothers me more than anything about this fridge is the noise level when the freezer is on. It appears to have 2 fans - one for the fridge and one for the freezer. When the fridge is on, the sound is very quiet. When the freezer comes on you will hear it. Even with the TV up loud I can still hear the freezer fan. It's much noisier than my 1995 Whirlpool. The only other complaint I have is also with the freezer. It has pull out shelves. I find it lacks room. I cannot get as many things into this freezer as I could with my old fridge. It's so bad that I ended up removing the ice storage bin and disabling the ice maker. I used to buy a turkey when it was on sale, or some other meats and stock up. Not any more. I have had to change my way of shopping because right now I have zero room left in the freezer and I know I cannot buy any more meats or frozen foods whether they are on sale or not.

Overall I'm satisfied with the fridge. The freezer fan noise and the low capacity of the freezer are my only cons. I would only recommend this fridge to people who do not require a larger freezer compartment. If you had a separate freezer then this fridge would be perfect.

needs repairs after 2 years
It seemed like a decent refrigerator, but started flooding after less than 2 years of ownership.
We'd walk in and find water on the floor all around the refrigerator.
This is the first refrigerator we've owned that needed repairs.
2 years is WAY too early for a refrigerator to start requiring expensive maintenance.
It seems to be a defect in the refrigerator, because I read that others are having the same problem.
I don't think Maytag knows how to build a refrigerator.
