About - Maytag MBF2258XE[W]

The Maytag MBF2258XE[W] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the MBF2258XE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
Three weeks before the warranty expired, the refridgerator began to freeze items. We have not changed thermostat settings since we bought it. It is expected to be repaired under warranty (barely). Not happy that this happened less than a year after purchase. Other than that, we have been happy with it.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Comment:
Owned this model 4 months and the compressor went out. Unbelievable! Had to wait a week and a half for Maytag to decide whether to replace compressor or to give me a new refrigerator. Lucky I had a second frige while waiting. They gave me a new one and went with the same model and color because there was nothing else out there around the price range. Hope I get more time out of this one.

Comment:
Main complaint is that the compressor died after only 7 years! That is unacceptable!

Otherwise, the refrigerator is reasonably good.
Slow makeing ice; sometimes there is a sympathetic vibration causing noise.
