About - Maytag MFF2258VE[W]

The Maytag MFF2258VE[W] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the MFF2258VE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.
About This Brand

One of the Whirlpool brands, Maytag is a major player in the bottom-freezer section of the market. The company was one of the first to introduce a French-door model with an external ice-and-water dispenser and a cabinet-depth model with an external dispenser.

Comment:
We bought a Maytag due to good brand reputation and at a good price. We did not get a maintenenace agreement because we've heard it's not usually needed on a new appliance. That turned out to be a mistake on our part, as was buying this refrigerator.

It operated fine the first year we had it and we were pleased, but during the second year, we noticed things starting to freeze in the refrigerator. Even after adjusting the temp controls, things near the bottom and at the back froze. We unplugged it to re-set things and it worked again for awhile.

In the last month (2 and a half years after purchase), the freezer went to 20 degrees below zero and the refrigerator compartment went up to 50-60 degreees. Adjusting temperature controls did very little. Unplugging to re-set helped for about a week, and then the problem recurred.

I went online and found many complaints identical to what we were experiencing with this brand & model. And then my wife & I encountered others here in our town who had similar bad experiences with the Maytag refrigerator.

We are cutting our loss and buying different brand to replace this one. We are very disappointed!

This will be my initial review. I will return again in a year unless I have problems that you need to be warned about.

This size fit well in our two person and two German Shepherd Dog home. It makes us feel like we have more room to move around even if there actually isn't.

The unit was maneuverable getting it in to the kitchen. Once on the tile it moved in and out for cleaning on it's own wheels easily. The manual suggests that the motor area and coils be brushed down monthly. With two big furry dogs I will have to do that at least once a month.

The unit is quiet. Late at night when everything is off I can hear a slight hum if I sit in the room with it. No big deal to me.

I believe this will be durable. I just has a strong feeling when I moved it around. It looks and feels well built.

My Wife would like more options for shelf set up in the refrigerator. She things the bottom freezer is spacious and easy to get things out.

We do not have the ice maker hooked up.

The big disappointment for us was the little things. We received no butter dish, egg holder, or a second divider for the deli drawer. For the price I would have expected these items unless I bought it at a Cheap'o Store.

We are empty-nesters. When previous fridge died, I decided to look at french-door style b/c I love the look. We had a bottom-freezer before and liked it. This is not a big unit and probably would be too small for a family, but it's perfect for us. Like...freezer drawer pulls out, soda-can rack, good-size door shelves, wide open space makes for EZ storage of wide boxes. Cons...door doesn't auto shut, pay attention or you'll leave it ajar, no water or ice dispenser but we don't care. We LOVE this unit and would buy it again.

MAKES MORE NOISE THAN A JACKHAMMER!

Strength
It won't sneak up on you.
Weakness
It is louder than my TV.
This thing sounds like a firing range. I haven't been able to sleep in weeks. They couldn't make a more annoying refrigerator if they tried.
