About - Samsung RF261BEAE[SR]

The Samsung RF261BEAE[SR] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the RF261BEAE[SR] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

In 18 months, I have had two major breakdowns of this model. I have also had to buy three new door shelfs. And believe it or not, a metal door hinge on the upper doors broke.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Comment:
The Samsung senior technician, who assessed the extreme (yes!) noise problem, said that this model has a history of the noise problem, and that I should not replace it with another of the same model. That could have the same problem, which they classify as unrepairable. This is not a normal noise problem, but sounds like it is being hit by a big hammer - we would hear it clearly, upstairs, and sometimes came downstairs to answer the front door. This was not the defroster (another source of such noise, but only twice a day), but occurred at random times, day and night.

Samsung's technical assistance and customer service were great. But you should not consider this model, as some have this defect, which is way beyond intolerable.

On the plus side, this unit holds everything I need it to hold. The door shelving could have more options for placement, but there are work-arounds.

I have owned this unit for nearly one year, and the ice maker has now failed for the third time, meaning this will be the fourth ice maker installed in the unit.

After the second ice maker failure, I decided to test the temperature settings to make sure I wasn't growing bacteria when I didn't want to. I set the refrigerator temperature to 37 degrees (f) and the freezer to 0 degrees (f). What I found, after placing calibrated thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer, was the following: the refrigerator temperature range was 36 degrees to 43 degrees. Good food safety requires food to be refrigerated to no higher than 41 degrees. The freezer range was -2 to -24 degrees. While this may be better, it really doesn't do me any good to be wasting electricity running the compressor so hard.

In addition, now a ball bearing has fallen from the freezer door, I think from one of the door glides.

After dealing with Samsung so often over the course of the year of owning this product, I am trying to get them to reimburse me for this unit and take if off my hands.
