About - Samsung RFG298HD[RS] (Lowe's)

The Samsung RFG298HD[RS] (Lowe's) is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the RFG298HD[RS] (Lowe's) are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
The refrigerator worked well at first, however, we considered the filter replacement rate was too often. When the sensor determines the time is right for a new filter, the lower ice maker stops working. When working properly, the ice makers do fine, but the dropping ice is excessively loud. After approximately 2 years the door ice/water dispenser stopped working. This is unsatisfactory considering the door dispenser is a primary feature which is almost generic in modern refrigerator design. Though I can live with noise and a high filter usage rate, an inoperative door dispenser is unacceptable in a primary home refrigerator of this size and price range. We specifically purchased this unit for the dual ice maker feature; oddly, it's the primary (top) ice maker that's unusable due to the faulty dispenser. We would not recommend any Samsung refrigerator to anyone.

Comment:
The freezer drawer rails had to be replaced within 6 mnths of purchase and now the drawer rattles and makes a terrible loud noise. You have to open/close it to make it stop.

1 yr and 2 mnths after purchase (warranty expired) the ice maker failed. The Tech said this was a common issue in this unit and could happen again. Cost me $450. Ouch!! Now, I empty the ice maker often to avoid another burned motor in the ice maker.

Do not purchase this unit!!! You'll regret!

Comment:
Most expensive self-destructing bottom ice maker money can buy. The bottom ice maker WILL NOT stay in one piece. After several repairs on the same problem, I used a pair of wire cutters to remove the offending mechanism. I purchased an Samsung Electric range about the same time and after the warranty was up, on both the fridge and stove, the malfunctions began.Don't buy Samsung appliances unless you like doing regular repairs. Save your money and buy the cheaper brands, they'll last longer.
