About - Samsung RFG298HD[RS] (Lowe's)

The Samsung RFG298HD[RS] (Lowe's) is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the RFG298HD[RS] (Lowe's) are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
Most expensive self-destructing bottom ice maker money can buy. The bottom ice maker WILL NOT stay in one piece. After several repairs on the same problem, I used a pair of wire cutters to remove the offending mechanism. I purchased an Samsung Electric range about the same time and after the warranty was up, on both the fridge and stove, the malfunctions began.Don't buy Samsung appliances unless you like doing regular repairs. Save your money and buy the cheaper brands, they'll last longer.

Comment:
the first Samsung refrigerator i purchased was the RFG297 which died around one year. although the store warranty was for one year, and the Samsung extended warranty was for 4 years, neither the store nor Samsung provided good customer service. in fact it was the worst - they were disinterested and did not treat the matter urgent. i had to pay out of pocket for service calls and the Samsung repairman sent out knew zero. it took 2 months to receive another replacement refrigerator which is the RFG298. for two months we were without a refrigerator which is unthinkable! the ice maker has a design flaw and does not cut off when full, throwing ice cubes behind the container and making groaning noises when this happens. as well, i had to buy another extended warranty on the replacement model which doesn't seem correct, as that meant paying double.

Comment:
The icemaker or water to the ice maker has been leaking into the freezer bottom forming an ice dam. I thought at first I had somehow put the filter in wrong and bought a new one to the tune of $50. I replaced the filter, cleaned up the ice dam and .... there is was again. I am now 7 months and 3 filters into this problem. I turned off the bottom ice maker (this refrigerator has 2 ice makers)and now I wonder if that is the problem. I have turned back on the bottom ice maker to see if that corrects my situation. Time will tell. I can say, I am not impressed with this refrigerator.
