About - Whirlpool Gold GB2FHDXW[Q]

The Whirlpool Gold GB2FHDXW[Q] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the Gold GB2FHDXW[Q] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
Where are the engineers? We have had this for 10 mo. and have water dripping out of the freezer. I Googled this problem and found many others reporting the same problem. It is a condensation drain that has too small a slit so you have to have a repairman take it apart make it larger!! We are under warranty so this time it will be fixed. But I hope it doesn't harm the floor as we wait for the repair.

Comment:
Bought this refrigerator for my mother who owned a previous Whirlpool refrigerator for ten years without a problem. This one is layed out nicely and energy efficient. However, I can't recommend this model because after owning it for 3 years it now leaks every week. It's a common problem for this model a lot of other people have had on here. Two different repairmen have come and looked at it and they said it's a design flaw in the refrigerator that allows ice buildup underneath with a poorly designed drain. This is a huge hassle for my mother who is older and infirm. We're going to have to get rid of it and buy another refrigerator already. Very disappointing.

Comment:
Eight months after buying this Whirlpool model the compressor failed and had to be replaced. Fortunately it was still under warranty, otherwise we would have had a $771 service bill to pay. Based on that failure we bought the extended warranty. Good thing we did since we needed another service repair visit just 10 months later for water leaking from the bottom of the freezer, a $245 repair bill and we don't have an ice maker or cold water dispenser option, it was a stopped up drainage tube that needed to be cleaned out. The technician said this was a common problem with bottom freezers. Over a thousand dollars in repair bills within the first 18 months. My advice is to avoid this model and if you do buy seriously consider getting an extended warranty.
