Highly dissappointed in Whirlpool!
Poor Design Of Drain Line
On 07/24/2012, we purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator from a local store, freezer on the bottom type. It seemed to be working perfectly except for discovering the ice maker arm in the up/off position quite often when the ice bin had very little ice in it. Then in August 2014, we began discovering little pools of water on the floor in front of the refrigerator. We thought possibly someone had dropped some ice and not picked it up so it melted and left the pool of water. After we discovered the third pool of water, we started investigating to see where the water was coming from. We found underneath the baskets in the freezer, the entire bottom was a sheet of ice. Of course, the refrigerator was out of warranty so my husband started conducting research on the internet and YouTube to see if he could figure out what might be wrong. He found that this is a known issue with this brand and several others. Upon researching, he found a replacement for the duckbill type drain plug on the back was necessary as well as defrosting the frozen drain lines. Replacement part: Tube-Drain by Whirlpool, W10619951 (AP5780744) which cost $21.46 + $6.95 shipping for a total of $28.41. He spent approximately 2 hours working to replace the part and thaw the frozen lines and had it back in good working order. This also seemed to have alleviated the ice maker arm from staying in the up/off position also. We have not encountered any other issues. I contacted Whirlpool to ask for reimbursement for the $28.41 spent on repairing it ourselves but was denied. The really, really sad part is that we, my husband and I, could afford to call a repair man if need be but there are countless individuals who would not have the financial resources to have their brand new, yes, BRAND NEW/LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD, refrigerator repaired nor would they have the knowledge or resources to do it themselves. This being said, I doubt that I would recommend this refrigerator to anyone!
How long have you owned it:
More than six months
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
