About - Whirlpool Gold GX5FHTXV[Q]

The Whirlpool Gold GX5FHTXV[Q] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the Gold GX5FHTXV[Q] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
We have been living with this fridge for about 3 months. Family of four with lots of entertaining recently. It holds a ton - full platters, my large 6 quart crock pot, lots of space for tall things in the doors. Love the door shelf that holds a gallon of milk. Door storage does not seem to take away from all the great shelf storage inside. Love the sleek look without water dispenser in the door, and better not having the kids constantly playing with it, but still having the filtered water from the button inside. Freezer drawers takes getting used to, after having had a top freezer, and hard to put certain things in (like cookie sheets of berries), but still impressed at how much it holds. No problems with noise or temperature. Overall a product we love at a great price point.

Comment:
I've had this fridge for just over 3 years, and really enjoy it. It's fairly roomy, very quiet, and keeps temperature well. I haven't had a single hiccup with its operation and don't agree with the CR claim that it's noisy. In fact, I bought it based on a CR review 3 years ago, in which they claimed it was superquiet. Unless they've started making a noisier version, I wouldn't consider noise a detractor. Ice making, which happens within the freezer drawer, is not the fastest. If you use a lot of ice, it might be better to get a model with an ice dispenser within the door. I wish that, for the price, my model had a digital indicator of what the internal temperatures are for the refrigerator and freezer, but that's hardly a deal breaker.
