About - Whirlpool Gold GX5FHTXV[Q]

The Whirlpool Gold GX5FHTXV[Q] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the Gold GX5FHTXV[Q] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
The fridge worked fine for one year. Then problems began.<br />Water collected on freezer 'floor.' would not drain to exterior evaporating tray. Without warranty, service call is very expensive and all reviews I have read say repair is not possible. I now have a fridge that cannot dispense water and cannot drain water. If I had the 5 year service contract (+ 500$) I wonder if a recall would have been made. Paying an extra sum for extended warranty defeats the purpose of thrifty shopping. All future purchases I make will have to have 7+ year warranty period. One year guarantee means you are buying junque.

Comment:
Having owned many refrigerators over many years with many properties I have to say that this is the only one I will never buy again and would have thrown out along with the washer and dryer I threw out of the same brand if I could only afford it. It leaks water and the repairman tried to fix it several times until the warranty ran out, with no luck. The ice maker suddenly decided to stop working and has not been repairable since, and the temperature flucuates depending on where you place items in the fridge. Also seems that nobody thought out the items that actually go into refrigerators when designing the layout as nothing fits anywhere besides just being shoved in and piled.

Comment:
Like so many others who've rated this refrigerator, we bought it based on Whirpool's reputation. However, we've had several problems with the fridge starting with a bad circuit board within a year of purchase. Then it was a problem of ice build up in the freezer due to a frozen drain hole (bad design). Recently we just found water on the floor from the ice making system/water dispenser and have to get yet another new part to repair the problem. What happened Whirlpool?
