About - Whirlpool Gold GX5FHTXV[Q]

The Whirlpool Gold GX5FHTXV[Q] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, bottom freezer refrigerator models like the Gold GX5FHTXV[Q] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
Had this model for eight months before it started to drip water from the ice dispenser. A couple of days later the freeze went out and a week later the refrigerator went out. After numerous repair calls that did not solve the problem, Whirlpool replaced it with the same model. The delivery driver from JB Hunt made a comment that they replace this type of refrigerator quite often. After four months with the new replacement, it started all over again. This time I don't plan for them to give me the option of a replacement. Stay as far away as you can from this piece of junk.

Comment:
I've owned this refrigerator for three years, and I'm replacing it with a Samsung today. We had a problem with ice buildup in the freezer. We called the Whirlpool repair line, and the tech they sent out said the freezer shelves had to be replaced at a cost of over $500. The tech said he sees this over and over with Whirlpool. Cheap, poor design ends up a failure even with light use. I'd repair it if my wife loved the fridge, but she has a number of other issues with it, so it will go to my office with the freezer taped shut. The early failure was not due to any misuse by us, it is poor quality by the manufacturer, pure and simple. I would not consider this unit at any price. You will regret it.

Two service calls in 2+ years, and I'm still waiting for a part after 8 days into this service call. I am told the normal waiting period for Whirlpool parts is 5-7 days, a long time to go without a fridge. I have the 5-year warranty, but they will pay up to $250 for lost food, and I lost much more than that. It is a cheaply made product, and I will purchase no more Whirlpool appliances.
