About - KitchenAid KSSS36QT[X]

The KitchenAid KSSS36QT[X] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, built in refrigerator models like the KSSS36QT[X] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two refrigerators with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
6yr old fridge. Needed new fan, needed rebuilt control board ($800 and process of 4 months) but still doesn't work properly. Reads over temperature and water display panel doesn't work. They regretfully denied my request to cover the service calls needed to remove, replace, and ship the board for rebuilding (approx $800) control board a second time. The best they will do is rebate you 25% on a new replacement fridge. So basically plan for a new fridge every 6 years. I will not purchase a Whirlpool product again.

Comment:
We purchased a builtin 42inch model Immediately after warranty we started having problems with the ice maker. It is poorly designed and needs frequent service. Now, we have a problem with the main control board and guess what? It is no longer available as a replacement part. Kitchenaid says we have to pull it and send in for repair. 2-3 weeks without a refrigerator. Are you kidding? It is 5 years old.

Comment:
If you want a refrigerator that looks good, buy this. The stainless steel doesn't have a dent or a scratch after six years. HOWEVER, if you want function, don't buy this! From day one there was a problem with the temperature being too high in the bottom third of the refrigerator. Sometimes it is 55*F, and it is never lower than about 50*F in the bottom drawers. I store flour and grains there, as it is even too warm for wines. Quite a waste of space! Kitchenaid has maintained that the refrigerator functions normally and that there is too much food in the freezer (which works fine). If I have fruit or vegetables that I'm not going to use in two days, I have to put them in my garage refrigerator (a 40-year-old GE) or they will turn brown and slimy!
