About - Sub-Zero BI36U[S]

The Sub-Zero BI36U[S] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, built in refrigerator models like the BI36U[S] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two refrigerators with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
Looking over the Consumer Reports refrigerator rating categories, I find it excludes several important ones in which Sub-Zero would excel. There is no rating for the gauge of the stainless steel used, how solid are the hinges, the overall weight of the unit, one or two compressors, how well insulated, etc.I also think Made in the USA should be a category.

Unlike other reviews in this category, this is actually for the model BI-36U. Bought a new house and the cutout was for a sub zero size. I did think of getting the cabinetmaker to mod to fit a conventional refrigerator, but thought lets just add that (mentally) to the cost of what I would have to spend and go for broke and get the sub zero. It looks great, heavy gauge stainless, doors like a bank vault. Counter depth makes things easy to reach. Well lit interior, easy to move glass shelves, and door bins. Lots of drawers with adjustable dividers. The air filter and higher fridge humidity really do keep things fresh much longer. Very precise digital controls with exact temperature choices(rather than the standard 1-10 on other makers) As it has a separate compressor for each side, you'd think it would use lots of electricity. No, less than a 100w bulb, and I actually got an energy star rebate. This is the most I have ever paid for an appliance and would do it again.

Comment:
This is in regard to the 36BI. I was doing a large kitchen and family room expansion and renovation. Since my kitchen would now be open to my living space, my requirements for a refrigerator now included the need to have it look like furniture or cabinetry AND to be quiet as well as store and preserve food and make ice and be reliable. Well it met only some of those requirements. It is NOT quiet. In fact it is very noisy. It became so noisy in the first 6 months that it sounded like airplanes overhead. A condensor fan went bad in the refrigerator section, which I had replaced. Now it is just noisy and the planes sound a little further off. Annoying during conversation, or movie viewing, and especially if you just want to enjoy the quiet. It is well illuminated inside. The glass shelves are sturdy and adjustable, but would be useful if they pulled out on gliders for easier access. This is not a deal breaker, though. The meat and vegetable drawers where a huge disappointment, as were the door shelves. They feel VERY cheap and flimsy for an appliance that cost as much as this one does. The dividers in the drawers are constantly out of their tracks and I fear one day the handle will pull right out of the face of the drawer. The door shelves will not accomodate a (now extinct) 2-liter bottle of soda OR a gallon of milk, somewhat understandable for a counter-depth appliance. Also, when the door is opened for more than a few moments (like 30 seconds) moisture gathers on the electronic touch control and caused it to change selections and power on and off the unit. I have not yet called service on this as I am still trying to decide what to do about the airplane noise in the condensor fan again. I utilize the service contract with my electric provider and they do not attend to water line fittings (ie ice maker supply). There is a leak in the ice maker filter cartridge holder that I have yet to be repaired due to that restriction, so I cannot comment on the quality or timeliness of ice. Overall I like the product, but think it is not all it should and could be.
