About - Kenmore 7160[3]

The Kenmore 7160[3] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, french-door refrigerator models like the 7160[3] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two models with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
While I loved the layout of this refrigerator, when my food began to spoil, I suspected the temperature was not accurate. The door read 37 for the refrigerator and zero for the freezeer. After investing in two refrigerator thermometers, I discovered that the refrigerator varied from 42-52 degrees and the freezer varied from 0-10 at various times during the day. The temperature of the room did not make an impact on this varieability. I had bought this based on Consumer Reports reviews. I am sorry I did!

It vibrates, it rattles, it buzzes even when empty! Beautiful fridge when not running. 30 day return from Sears, arranged for exchange and they cancelled the day of delivery and rescheduled past the 30 days and would not guarantee refund.

Comment:
I have had IMO more than my fair share of issues with this unit. First the freezer filled with water and what didn't freeze ended up on the floor. Apparently the drain where the auto defrost drains got clogged, according to the service guy this is common. I get lots of condensation around where the doors meet especially in the summer when the windows in the house are open. Enough to pool water on the floor. Every few months the freezer drawer freezes shut, probably from the condensation getting on the sliders. Have to pry it open take a hair dryer to the tracks then I put special grease on the slides.

Doors also don't close automatically you need to push them shut. NOT good if you have kids as the door will always be open. Tried using the levelers to lean it back slightly and it helped a little bit but still a problem.
