About - KitchenAid KSF26C6X[YY]

The KitchenAid KSF26C6X[YY] is part of the refrigerator test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, side by side refrigerator models like the KSF26C6X[YY] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Temperature performance:
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.

Energy efficiency:
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two refrigerators with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.

Noise:
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.

Comment:
This is my second KitchAid frig. Shelf positioning isn't so great because the door trays get in the way. It's configurable to a certain extent, but never to my liking. However, the biggest problem is that drawer facing breaks off so easily. At first I thought the problem was due to the weight of the drawer, but even when we keep minimal items in the drawers they are still prone to breakage. I've already had to replace drawers twice within 1 year's time. My first KitchenAid frig had trouble with ice maker and water pooling in the bottom on freezer side. After so many attempts to fix, the insurance said it was irreparable. I am so done with Kitchenaid refrigerators.

Comment:
The ice maker design concept is poor. The ice hardens and blocks the water coming in to make more ice, hence it leaks! I'm in my 70's and without a doubt this is the worst refrigerator my wife & I have ever owned since we were married. Three others on our street have the same model and all have had the same issues. Shame on Whirlpool for not having a recall on this model. They have lost four customers for life.
