The Maytag MSD2559XE[W] is part of the refrigerator
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, side by side refrigerator
models like the MSD2559XE[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
This combines results of tests measuring the accuracy of initial temperature settings along with how well a model 1) kept optimum temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer at the same time; 2) kept temperatures even throughout each compartment; 3) kept temperatures constant despite changes in room temperatures; and 4) maintained set temperatures even with very high room temperatures.
This reflects electricity consumption (based on our tests) per cubic foot of measured usable storage space. For example, two refrigerators with the same energy cost per year may have different energy efficiencies -- the unit with more storage space being more efficient.
Noise level was measured when the compressor started up and during steady running. Subjective judgments by a panel of listeners supplemented our noise-meter readings.
About This Brand
One of the Whirlpool brands, Maytag is a major player in the bottom-freezer section of the market. The company was one of the first to introduce a French-door model with an external ice-and-water dispenser and a cabinet-depth model with an external dispenser.
Claimed capacity (cu. ft.) Claimed capacity is the manufacturer's estimate of the volume, in cubic feet, of interior space.
Claimed capacity (cu. ft.)
Cabinet-depth model Cabinet-depth models usually measure 27 to 28 inches deep, not quite flush with the cabinets, but at least three inches shallower than many standard 36-inch-wide models. You can get models with stainless exteriors or panel kits.
Water dispenser The water dispenser is normally accessible from the outside as part of the ice and water dispenser.
Stainless/SS-look option Stainless steel is stylish but it shows fingerprints. Another option: a vinyl-covered metal finish that gives you a stainless-steel look but resists smudging.
Energy cost/yr. ($) Estimated cost in dollars, based on the current year's average national electricity rate. Your cost will vary depending on the rate for electricity in your area.
This has been a fine refrigerator with two unfortunate design flaws. 1) New ice cubes often don't make it into the ice bucket on the door and fall to the floor of the freezer, making a very loud noise. Dinner guests have asked if someone is being shot in the kitchen. This happens regardless of whether the ice bucket is empty or mostly full. 2) We must completely empty the ice bucket every few days and thaw out the frozen ice that has accumulated from the melting and re-freezing which occurs on the bottom of the bucket. Once an ice dam forms, ice can no longer be dispensed through the door. If this is not done at least weekly, there will be some melting at the bottom of the bucket, near the ice dispenser, and water will collect in the tray. These two design flaws keep me from recommending an otherwise nice refrigerator, with good space, and an attractive design.

So far a good refrigerator
Holds Temperature Well
I've had this refrigerator for a couple of months now and thought I would share some of my observations...

I love that there are seperate dispencers for the ice and water, this minimizes the need for my small children to push buttons to get their own cups of water. The way the freezer is designed, the second shelf does not go all the way to the back wall of the freezer. So if you have long things, like a long pack of chicken, to store in the freezer, it fits but only at an odd angle, taking up space. The icemaker is good, storage on the door and it makes ice pretty quickly. There are random ice cubes that end up at the bottom of the freezer, but not a big deal.

For the refrigerator, I think the top shelf feels a little weak. I usually store gallon containers of milk and juice on the top shelf. Now I'm not sure this new fridge can handle the weight and it makes me a bit nervous. I put a couple of gallons at the back of the shelf where it is the most sturdy and the remaining in the door or on it's side on another shelf.

This fridge does not have textured handles, which makes it easier to keep them clean.

Overall, I would absolutely recommend this refrigerator.

Ice maker freezes every 3 weeks!
Holds Temperature Well
Space For Tall Items
Bad Ice Maker
Have had it serviced 3 times because of the ice maker. Approximately every three weeks the ice maker won't dispense ice and we have to take all the ice out and pour warm water thru it until the dispenser melts. This is messy and a pain-in-the-***. The technicians have told us this is a design flaw that is not fixable at this point. We have had the ice bucket replaced and still can't remove it from the door. It would be a fine refrigerator if the ice maker worked consistantly.
