It's a great toaster oven...IF IT WORKS. 5 stars for when it does work; Zero stars for when it doesn't.

My problem is similar to Kitchen Kelly's except the touchpad problen happened only about 1 month after purchase:

The touchpad started working intermittently after about a month. It has gotten progressively worse since and after about 1-1/2 months is practically unusable.

I contacted customer service via their website about the touchpad problem. Their response is that they are sending me a replacement. Oster's willingness to replace is a plus.

I hope that the replacement will be reliable and that they take care of their quality control problem.

I got an Oster Counter Top Oven, model TSS-TTV-MNDG, as a Christmas present from a relative. He is a most stalwart shopper for value and picked this unit. I've actually wanted a toaster oven for several years and even bought a few. But I quickly returned them upon finding control deficiencies. More on that later.

The first thing I did was read the instruction booklet, which I give an A+. It features large, easy-to-read font; it's free of errors; and it's written in plain English - concise, unambiguous, and complete. Although it's written in multiple languages, they are segregated, which allows continuous reading rather than hurdling over interspersed translations.

The oven's form factor is efficient and provides a spacious interior in a relatively compact footprint. The exterior is has a black matte surround with bright metal trim on the front. The broiler pan and racks are sturdy and well-finished.

The oven is full-featured, including a convection setting and an interior light which is more useful than I anticipated. The electronic keypad is simple and intuitive, with an easy-to-clean overlay. You don't have to clean around and under protruding knobs and dials. The digital time and temperatures are precise and repeatable. The oven temperature is accurate. The convection setting thoroughly cooked two refrigerated stuffed chicken thighs at 350ยบ in 15 minutes.

Like almost all combination ovens, the toaster function is ho-hum compared to a real toaster. Bread takes twice as long, uses more electricity, and comes out less uniform.

All of the oven's drawbacks are in the control/display arena:

1. There is no tactile feedback as you find on a computer keyboard. Nor any audible feedback as on a microwave oven. You have to watch the display for changes to find out when you pushed the keypad hard enough. And you have to push harder than you might expect. In fact, the oven will slide back on the countertop if not restrained. Fortunately, it has a couple of horizontal feet on the back that keep the oven away from a wall or back splash. That's where you'll want to keep it unless you want to use two hands to push one button.

2. The major buttons have gray lettering on a black background. Why not make them bright white - like the Oster logo on the oven door? Or use a backlit keypad?

3. The LED display for time and temperature setting is bright green and very easy to see. But the function modes (broil, toast, etc.) are in tiny red lettering that measure 70/1000 of an inch high. You may not be able to read it a foot way without perfect vision. They should be in the same bright green used for the larger indicator to provide better contrast and readability.

4. The oven temperature is not displayed. Only your desired temperature setting.

That said, the controls are still better than any other unit I've come across. In short, this the best oven I've found. I'm very satisfied with it and recommend it.

Comment:
Purchased and returned first unit due to inaccurate time keeping. Gained 1.5 minutes per 24 hours. A nuisance.

Purchased second unit. Inaccurate time keeping. Gained 1 minute per day. Returning.

Saw some other reviews at other web sites that complained the clock is inaccurate, some saying it gained 10 to 15 minutes per day. Guess I was more fortunate, but I will not keep this unit either.
