Comment:
I've owned mine now for four years and moved it across the country twice. It still hasn't died. That being said, I can only toast a batch or two before it burns the 2nd or 3rd batch. When I bought it, the plunger was loose. Black & Decker has sold the brand name to inferior quality construction. It'll probably last you with limited use but don't expect too much.

Toasting - Dumb Question
Comment:
I saw this review and noticed that our old toaster is rated within the review. It has been a reliable appliance, and we are happy with its performance.

The only minor quibbles I can recall - there is a chunk of bread inside it that is too big to come out of the bottom crumb tray, which slides out from a 1/4 slot at the back. We toast a lot of bagels with seeds on them, and this tray has almost no volume to it. The big crumb won't fall out; it is trapped in the housing somehow.

Also, the toggle to lower the toast is friction fit, and over the years of use, it will slide off if it is pulled on. Every now and then it comes off inadvertantly - not a big problem, really.

Our line voltage is usually over 120V, and this toaster has performed just fine for us for several years. For the price, I would give it a try.

Really wanted to like this. Liked the fact that a cage closed down on thin bread slices to hold in place when toasting. However:
1. The toaster left a 1/2 wide non-toast (as in white) swath along the bottom of the slices. How hard would it be to put a heating element or 2 at the BOTTOM of the carriage's travel?

2. With the dial set at 5 out of a max of 6, it still took 1.5 cycles to get a nice shade of brown. 1 cycle gave an off-white shade to the slices (except for the bottom margin); had to start another round, then cancel after a minute or 2, to get a nice brown (except for the bottom 1/2 of white). I have doubts about the range of toasting available.

3. MOST worrisome was the heat it put out above the toaster. It's wide, which does accommodate bagels, but the slot widths allow a lot of heat to escape above. 6 above, it was 180F using an infrared thermometer. While I could place it at the edge of a counter, I was concerned that it might be inadvertently slid back under a kitchen cabinet and then started. Don't want that much heat generated under wood cabinets.
