About - Maytag Maxima XL MED8000AG

The Maytag Maxima XL MED8000AG is part of the clothes dryer test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, electric dryer models like the Maxima XL MED8000AG are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Drying performance:
This score combines performance on three types of laundry loads of different sizes and fabric mixes: A 12-lb. load, predominantly cotton, representing a family's large weekly load; an 8-lb. load of cotton/polyester blend clothing; and a 3-lb. load of synthetic delicates, women's pajamas, nightgowns, bras and underwear.

Capacity:
Among the models we tested, drum volume varied from about 6 to 8.0 cu. ft.

Convenience:
For this measurement, we judged controls and ergonomics, such as ease of loading and unloading, servicing the lint filter, whether the door could clear a tall basket, and whether the machine has a raised edge to contain spills.

Comment:
Dryer started making noise that sounded like a zipper or pants button hitting against the drum as the clothes tumbled in the dryer. After a few months, the noise became noticeably louder which caused me to investigate more closely. I discovered the front lip of the drum had split along the welding seam. The split caused the drum to become oblong in shape wherein the high-spot on the drum rubbed against the inner-wall of the dryer. Checked online and there is a great example of the noise my dryer makes at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NKCYB4y6Ds. At this point, I've heard nothing back from Maytag customer support. Even though I purchased the extended warranty, it appears I might be stuck with a failed dryer that is only 2 years old. My previous Maytag dryer lasted 18 years before I decided to replace it with the Maytag Maxima.

Drum Has Dents And Burrs
Best Uses
Comment:
After removing first load of laundry from the dryer, I noticed a two inch dent on the drum. It looks like someone used a chisel on the outside of the drum so the dent is inward. There were multiple dents like this but they were smaller. This lead me to inspect the whole drum. I found burrs near the rim of the drum where there were more chisel type marks. Some of these burrs were large where I would rip a nail if I scratched at it. Note that these defects are from the factory and NOT made by delivery people. The store ordered a new one for us.

Meanwhile I called Maytag and they sent a local repair outfit to the house to inspect the dryer. The repair outfit photographed the defects. Maytag then wanted to replace the drum. A drum was ordered and the repair company called to let me know that it had the same defects and that they would order another one. The repair company delivered the second drum, this one was not dented but it had the burrs (the dents would not cause damage to clothes but the burrs most certainly will). I rejected the second drum and asked the repair company to have Maytag call me. It's clear that Maytag has a problem with these drums and I wanted to escalate it. Never heard from Maytag or the repair company... I purchased this washer and dryer because it was made in America and Consumers gave it a high rating. If the drum were perfect, I would have given this a 4 rating.

Now the second dryer has been delivered from the store and it too has a couple of small dings and a small burr. I decided that this burr I could at least live with so I accepted it. The dryer works fine (for now).

Wish that I could attach photos of these defects.
Who would think to run their fingertips all around the inside of a dryer drum looking for burrs where there should be NONE!

Sorry, but I would not recommend this unit!
