About - Kenmore 7800[2]

The Kenmore 7800[2] is part of the clothes dryer test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, gas dryer models like the 7800[2] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Drying performance:
This score combines performance on three types of laundry loads of different sizes and fabric mixes: A 12-lb. load, predominantly cotton, representing a family's large weekly load; an 8-lb. load of cotton/polyester blend clothing; and a 3-lb. load of synthetic delicates, women's pajamas, nightgowns, bras and underwear.

Capacity:
Among the models we tested, drum volume varied from about 6 to 8.0 cu. ft.

Convenience:
For this measurement, we judged controls and ergonomics, such as ease of loading and unloading, servicing the lint filter, whether the door could clear a tall basket, and whether the machine has a raised edge to contain spills.

Comment:
I've owned this dryer for about two months, and on the whole it does the job well. First the good features:

- You can order it with the exhaust vented through either side, which can be convenient depending on the location
- Even with its large capacity, its physical size isn't much larger than a standard dryer
- The drum light is nice

It took some time, though, to figure out some of its quirks:

- When you turn it on, it plays a loud, annoying tune. No way to disable it.
- It doesn't remember your settings, so you have to re-enter them every single time.
- The controls are confusing: sometimes you can use some of them, sometimes others.
- The Dry Level choices are too coarse. I found that the Normal cycle with Normal dry level left my clothes crispy, while changing the dry level to Less left them damp. The Casual cycle with Normal dry level works most of the time.
- The large capacity means a very deep drum, which when combined with the drop-down door makes me glad to have long arms.
- It's not the quietest dryer, although it's not bad.

Great capacity. I can dry tons of towels in one load. Love the variety of heat settings. I am not a big fan of [@], but I would buy this machine all over again.:-))

Comment:
Kenmore Dryer leaves brown streaks on clothes, more noticable on whites. Go on line and see how many complaints there are on this issue, seals on drum pinches cloths and leaves brown stains that will not come out, poor seal design and costly to repair and clothes are ruined. New seals will wear and cause same problem. Oh by the way it's not the Sears washer, wet a clean white towel and dried it and the streaks appeared. Purchased this unit as a wedding gift three years ago, what a disaster... Will never purchase another Sears product.
