About - Finish Powerball Tabs

The Finish Powerball Tabs is part of the dishwasher detergent test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, dishwasher detergent models like the Powerball Tabs are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Type:
Liquids and powders generally pour easily; gels have a thicker consistency than liquids. Tablets are a dry, solid premeasured amount of detergent. Pacs have a dissolvable outer package containing a premeasured amount of liquid, gel, or powder. A dispenser product uses a cartridge that automatically dispenses a charge of detergent for 12 loads of dishes.

Size:
Indicates either the net contents in ounces or the number of wash cycles you get from a tablet, pac, or dispenser product.

Cleans dishes:
Gauges how well a detergent removed a caked-on puree of foods from glass dishes.

Works well for me

I have tried the three CR top-rated name brands: Finish Powerball, Finish Quantum, and Cascade Complete. Of the three, the Finish Powerball (not Quantum) far better than the rest, and do quite well even with my hard water.

I have never seen the white residue that others have complained about. In fact, these tablets get our glasses cleaner than the other products I've used. I also have never seen the metal discoloration. I don't usually wash pots/pans, but my stainless flatware looks good after many washings with these tablets.

I should point out that (1) I always use rinse aid (unlike CR), (2) I always start my dishwasher after running hot water through my sink to start it all as hot as possible, and (3) I almost always run my dishwasher on the auto setting, which adjusts the cycle based on the soil level it senses.

It's amazing to see the dichotomous reviews for Finish Powerball Tabs -- users seem to love it or hate it, nothing in the middle. Must be due to differences in water and/or dishwashers.

We are in the love it category after a year of use because our dishes, glassware and flatware come out completely clean, no residue, no cloudiness or discoloration. Individually wrapped tabs are convenient and don't absorb moisture over time. Buying at a warehouse club makes the cost extremely reasonable.

Nearing the end of the 100 unit box that I bought at Costco and I am having the discolaration issue that CR mentions. This is a bummer because I've fallen in love with the little tabs.
Prior to Finish, I used either Cascade or Costco/Kirkland powder and I am definitely an over filler. I like the premeasured amount of the tabs.
Switching to Kirkland tabs. Hope they don't turn my glasses grey, too.

I was using Finish in a Jenn Air dishwasher about five years old, for what it's worth. I don't use a drying agent. Water, very hard.
