Good bug vac

Comment:
We bought this vac primarily to suck spiders and silverfish. At full charge it screams, handling spiders, crickets, earwigs, bread crumbs, hair, etc. with no problem. Roaches, however, won't fit into the nozzle, and if left in the bin for a day or two, any of the larger insects begin to emit a foul smell. I've never had an insect find its way out between uses. Some will survive in there for a week or more.

The Ni-Cd battery only provides useful power for about the first 20-30% of a full charge. After that, the speed of the impeller decreases to the point that it may not be able to overcome the hold-down grip of some spiders. I understand that to avoid the Memory Effect, it's best to fully discharge Ni-Cd cells before recharging. The PHV-1800 takes about 25 minutes to discharge to 0V from a full charge, with about 3-5 minutes of usefully high power at the beginning of discharge.

Comment:
I use the Pivot in addition to both Roomba and Neato robots to help clean along baseboards and in corners on hardwood floors. For a small vac this has an amazing amount of suction and is great on picking up just about anything that will fit into the nozzle. Run time is great. I can get a couple of rooms done with no problem without running out of charge. I find that the lower setting is adequate for most tasks. I seldom find the need to put it on full power.

I empty the dust bin after each use and vacuum out the filter with my large floor vac. 30 seconds and put it back in the charger ready for the next use.

Frankly I am surprised at some of the negative reviews. Perhaps others got a bad battery? Mine is still going strong after a couple of years. I have a dust buster as well but almost never use it any longer. Compared to a Dust Buster the Pivot is a Mercedes to a Yugo. No comparison.

Comment:
This vacuum was purchased based on CR ratings. I feel it worked well enough for the time I used it (3 yrs.) One of the frustrating drawbacks was the quick discharge of the batteries after a full charge. This alllowed only 5-7 minutes of continuous use before power and suction began to be lost. After 3 yrs. the batteries lost their ability for recharge and could not be replaced without being rebuilt. The cost of the batteries from B&D website lists battery at $50 for a $70-$75 machine. Perfect example of planned obsolescence.
