Comment:
I purchased this vacuum because CU recommended it, but I can't recommend it. The hose flops off the hook constantly, the pedal that releases the handle from the upright position broke off, so that it constantly flops over. The bags are tiny and need to be replaced often. The beater bar brushes are falling out at about 3 years of use. The bare floor switch isn't toe-operated. On the plus side, the motor/belt/suction side is still going strong, no problems there.

Easy To Empty

Cons
Hose should be longer
Short Power Cord

Comment:
After four years, the suction is as good as ever. A little on the heavy side to pickup and move, but not noticable when vacuuming (but I'm only 5'2).

Cord is quite short so I use an extension cord with it. Don't mind it much since it vacuums so well.

I've been buying these vacuums for the last 10 years.
Prior to that I used Electrlux canister vacuums. For the money, this vacuum is hard to beat. Great suction, adjustable height, Brush on/off switch, etc. The only downside is that the vacuum is a little heavy and it is a little difficult on steps. Any vaccum like this is difficult on steps. I'd give up a little suction for a powered movement. On thick synthetic piles you must have the height at half way or higher in order to vacuum effectively. I only expect to get 3-4 years out of these. However, I had one for 7 that was used in house for 4 years and then in the the garage for 3 years until it broke. For longer life and better suction, the filter at the bottom of the bag should be cleaned/replaced after a couple of years of use. It would probably be a good idea to change the HEPA filter or remove(if mot affected by allegries) after a couple of years, too. I've never had a belt fail, but sometimes when they get older the brush continues to spin(even when using the hose) unless you have the off belt switch engaged. Replacing the belt with the one provided will probably fix this. However, by the time that happens the vacuum is ready to be used in the garage and ultimately thrown away after many years of service. I usually vacuum around 1700 sq. ft once per week on area rugs and hardwood floors.

Eureka Boss 4870.The beater brush does not turn
The vacuum is only 2yrs old, was serviced under warranty but never fixed correctly. I have followed setting instructions. I was sold a LEMON and have received no satisfaction from Eureka Customer Service. Will buy a different brand tomorrow.

I hated it!!
02/27/2007
Strength
Hard to tell in the short amount of time that I had it. Although I will say that it is lighter than the vacuum that it was replacing.
Weakness
Construction and quality control.
I was so disappointed. It was so highly rated by Consumer Reports. I returned it to the store this morning after trying to use it just a few times. Using it was a battle. I could not get it to release into the vacuuming position and when I was done, I could not get it to return to the upright position. Changing from floor to carpet was a battle every time. Air blows out the front of the machine (thru the HEPA filter)and sends dust and hair-balls skitter along the bare floor. When I took the cover off to remove the bag this morning before returning the machine, it took 10 tries to get the cover back on. The vacuum I was using sure did not sound like the vacuum in the rest of these reviews -- which I read before I shopped! I guess my only recommendation would be to play with the floor model before you buy (which I did not, so much did I put my trust in all the reviews!)

Fluffs up my carpet
02/23/2007
Strength
Easy to assemble, on-board hose and tools
Weakness
Small bag, noisy
Overall I am happy with my purchase. I do, however, trying a vac in person before buying one on-line. I didn't do that. The unit squeaks a little. I haven't figured out why yet. It does a much better job of fluffing my carpet than my old vac. This was rated high with the big consumer magazine. I like the fact that I can adjust the height. It makes it much easier to vac the thick bathroom rugs.
