About - Electrolux IQ Steam EIFLS55I[IW]

The Electrolux IQ Steam EIFLS55I[IW] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the IQ Steam EIFLS55I[IW] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

After owning this machine just one month, I had the repairman out 3 different times! The door was near impossible to open without excessive force, the soap drawer stuck not allowing it to open freely but most importantly, anything stuck in a pocket (coin, screw, etc) got trapped in the drum and had to be removed by tearing the drum apart by a repairman. Way too many obstacles to jump over just to do a load of laundry!

Comment:
Purchased this new washer along with the dryer and pedestals in March 2012. Washer started putting bleach stains on clothes. After ruining several pieces of clothing, I called for service. The first service call was very prompt. Because bleach was involved, the tech replaced 3 parts all dealing with the dispensing of the bleach. This repair didn't work. I spoke with the service company and they indicated that there was nothing else they could do and that this problem has happened before, so after bleaching several more pieces of clothing I called Electrolux again. They said that they needed to send someone out again, so I told them what the repair company had said. They needed verification that the machine was not repairable. It took quite some time for this to happen. I had stopped using bleach in the machine, but somehow it was still bleaching clothes. I would call, and nobody would get back to me. Finally, after about a month and 15 pieces of ruined clothing at a cost in excess of $800, they authorized replacement of the washer. After making sure the new washer was working properly, I attempted to get reimbursement for the damaged clothing. They had me send pictures of all the damaged articles. Again, after many calls not being returned, I finally started calling every 15 or 20 minutes and leaving a message until they got tired of having to listen to all the voicemails. They only offered $150 for all the damaged clothing. Oh yeah, have also had to have 2 service calls on the dryer. The door wasn't closing properly.

Comment:
We bought the EIFLS60JIW model at a local appliance store known for good service. They recommended Electrolux for reliability. EIFLS60JIW adds a 15 minute Fast Wash cycle, a slightly larger tub, and is the most energy efficient model over the EIFLS55I reviewed by CR. It is amazing! The normal cycle is shorter than CR shows, and the choice of cycles and options is endless.

We use the pet bedding cycle for all the places our dog sleeps, and those items have never been that clean. It spins everything almost dry and handles much larger loads than a standard washer. With the matching dryer, it stacks in a small area, just 27 X 32 which was important in our condo.

I still can't believe how quiet and vibration free it is after it balances itself and starts spinning at 1400rpm. This is the one!
