About - LG WM3470H[W]A

The LG WM3470H[W]A is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the WM3470H[W]A are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.
About This Brand

South Korean company LG was the first to market with steam washers; the company claims its machines provide real steam (created by a steam generator). The latest wrinkle from LG is what it calls the Allergiene cycle. That cycle, says LG, reduces and removes 95 percent of dust mites and pet dander from a load. LG washers range in price from $900 to $1,600.

Comment:
This comment is particular to the WM3470. I wished was had considered a bigger one. We're a family of 4 including two young boys and we do a fair amount of laundry. 4 cubic feed doesn't seem that big, even though the CR review lists capacity as very good. I wish we had gotten a bigger unit. That being said, washer seems to work pretty well. A little noisier at start-up than our old top loader, and to me at least it dries really well, though it's true that clothes kinda stick flat to the inside, but I don't mind. We haven't noticed any funky smell yet, but it's only been a week. I really just wanted to say - get the biggest possible unit you can.

Comment:
I've had to call several times because clothes and towels do not come clean. Food particles remain on dish towels, bath towels smell like a locker room, and clothes seem as if they've been rinsed, but not fresh.

I've done tub cleans, drained the lower hose compartment, used less soap, had a service tech take everything apart (nothing apparently wrong). Now minimally we've added an extra rinse and that helps a little, but certainly not efficient or green to waste water. My old Neptune front loader never gave me an ounce of grief until it died after 12 years.
LG is listening but I'm not sure what they will be able to do.
