The LG WM8500HVA is part of the washing machine
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine
models like the WM8500HVA are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.
About This Brand
South Korean company LG was the first to market with steam washers; the company claims its machines provide real steam (created by a steam generator). The latest wrinkle from LG is what it calls the Allergiene cycle. That cycle, says LG, reduces and removes 95 percent of dust mites and pet dander from a load. LG washers range in price from $900 to $1,600.
Energy star The federal Energy Star program, administered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, identifies a wide range of home appliances that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. These appliances can help you use less energy at home and save money on your utility bills.
Stainless-steel tub Tubs constructed of stainless steel are likely to be more durable than plastic or porcelain, and they allow for higher spin speeds. Plastic is the next most durable choice.
Auto temp. control This feature automatically mixes hot and cold water to reach the chosen wash temperature (which differs on various makes of washers). It's a good way to compensate for normal variations in tap-water temperature and prevents problems caused by water that's too cold, which keeps detergent from working properly.
Auto temp. control
Auto bleach dispenser Automatic Bleach dispenser releases the bleach at the proper point in the cycle, giving the detergent additives sufficient time to work.
We got this machine directly from LG at a bargain price when we convinced them to exchange it for the recalled top loader(plus some of our money) that was never fixed correctly. Do not buy an Energy Star top loader. They just don't make any sense any more compared to a front loader. They are tough on your clothes and even if they spin as fast, their smaller diameter tub means that the clothes do not wring out as well. Getting back to this front loader, it is gigantic and great for bedding and everything else. It is reasonably quiet except for the drain pump. When we first received it, the pump seemed so loud that I called for service but I was told the noise was normal. The machine spins very fast but not as fast as our previous Whirlpool front loader that almost got towels dry during the final spin. Notwithstanding, it is hard to beat this LG.

My Dream Machine

The Tops In Machines
Longer Cycle Than Our Old
Awesome At King Spread
Great For Large Rugs
We absolutely love this machine. It is great on our King size bedspread that I used to have to take to the cleaners. I also have washed some large rugs in it and a whole kitchen full of throws rugs. It washes clean and stains come out on the long cycle. If I had any cons to list it would be the longest cycle Is quite long. We have had a couple of issues with the start button sticking but my husband seems to be able to get it to work with time.
