The Maytag Maxima XL MHW7000AW is part of the washing machine
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine
models like the Maxima XL MHW7000AW are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.
The following models have the same ratings as Maytag Maxima XL MHW7000AW.
Features and specs may vary
The Ratings applied to untested model Maytag Maxima XL MHW6000AW come from our tests of model Maytag Maxima XL MHW7000AW, which in our judgment is enough alike in its performance, features, and specs that our test results apply to both.
About This Brand
This Whirlpool-owned brand is positioned as a durable brand but is priced a bit lower than Whirlpool-branded products. The Maytag brand has two lines, the Epic and Epic Z, which cost $1,000 and $800, respectively.
Energy star The federal Energy Star program, administered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, identifies a wide range of home appliances that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. These appliances can help you use less energy at home and save money on your utility bills.
Stainless-steel tub Tubs constructed of stainless steel are likely to be more durable than plastic or porcelain, and they allow for higher spin speeds. Plastic is the next most durable choice.
Auto temp. control This feature automatically mixes hot and cold water to reach the chosen wash temperature (which differs on various makes of washers). It's a good way to compensate for normal variations in tap-water temperature and prevents problems caused by water that's too cold, which keeps detergent from working properly.
Auto temp. control
Auto bleach dispenser Automatic Bleach dispenser releases the bleach at the proper point in the cycle, giving the detergent additives sufficient time to work.
I think that this washer gets the job done, but considering the price, it could definitely be better. Specifically, the cycle times are very long and it could use a rapid wash cycle, and most importantly a hand wash cycle. My previous front load washer had a hand wash cycle that would act like you were actually hand washing... clothes sit in soapy water and are gently agitated (not spun) to wash. There is no hand wash on this machine. You might say that a delicate cycle would suffice, but not in my opinion. The clothes still spin throughout the delicate cycle. I really miss my hand wash cycle, and now I feel like I'm going to have to start actually hand washing in a sink. As for cycle times, they are LONG! They start out long and get even longer because EVERY SINGLE CYCLE goes at least 15-35 minutes longer than the displayed time says it will. Very frustrating. Just tell me the truth from the beginning and I would know what to expect. I get tired of checking on the laundry, expecting it to be done, and there's always more time left. That said, clothes in general seem clean, particularly with power wash (but it takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes for that one!) The very best thing about it is that it is very quiet and essentially zero vibration. I am super impressed as far as that goes. Vibration/noise is much better than my last machine, which is one of the reasons I went with this Maytag. Too bad you can't have everything you want in one washing machine.

None at all
I have an active family of 5 and the teens change their clothes 2-3 times a day and it all goes into the dirty clothes baskets. My prior Maytag washer of 20 years was beyond repair and I was forced to look into it's high tech replacements. I visited many stores in person and online...boy were they complicated to operate. I went to CR and started investigating for serious possibilities...I trusted them and knew I wanted another Maytag. 3 hours later after reviewing their recommendations and reading over a hundred personal user reviews I chose this washer and its accompanying dryer. My retailer was having a Maytag promotion sale and also a rebate on this pair. From the time that my prior washer died to the day that I ran my first load in the new one 2 weeks had elapsed. I know I had in excess of 200 pounds of clothes to process. I read my manual and started my first load. 3 days later I'm still washing clothes and am actually happy about it. I feel like I have been given an extra pair of hands...like I have a laundry fairy. I am crazy about these two machines. They are very easy to use, the labeling terminology around the dials and sidebars are intuitive, the touch pads responsive, and my clothes could NOT be more clean. There is no way to mess up as you program how you want your clothes to be washed. The units operate quietly and there is a nice chime that alerts me when cycles are finished. The washer has never gotten off balance, made noises, nor failed to function as programmed. I am so sorry to read of other peoples' misfortunes but my w/d pair are draft horses in my laundry room and I'd never give them up.

A very good washing machine but is not easy to adjust all the options. Also, the manual says there is a Quick Wash setting on the dial and there is not. Aside from that it does a great job.
