About - Maytag Performance Series MHWE950W[W]

The Maytag Performance Series MHWE950W[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the Performance Series MHWE950W[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
Bought this in Aug 2011, spin became gradually louder at 14 months, called service man at 15 months to do the same thing that others have written - open the door, rattle the drum and told us the bearing was shot. Estimate was $1,000, which is crazy after only 16 months! We will never buy another Maytag product again and will recommend that anyone I know avoid that brand for everything.

Comment:
We bought the 950 series less than two years ago. we had to wait for it for 6 weeks because it wasn't even out yet. We were told by Maytag it was the top of the line. I also researched on Consumer Reports and it was considered really good. Yesterday I get an F21 error while washing four pairs of Buckle jeans (yes they cost $100 a pair), I tried to cancel the cycle and it wouldn't cancel. I hit the pause button so the door would open. The door will not open. Called their service, they said they couldn't come out until Friday. By then my jeans will be lying in moldy water and be ruined. My husband asked them who''s going to pay for the jeans. No response. He said Friday is not good enough. They give you the runaround all the time. I know because less than one month ago, our dryer quit. Geez, isn't it odd that less then two years both machines quit at the same time? we called theirservice provider, man comes out and replaces a fuse. Less than 20 minutes after he was gone, the dryer quit again. Another man comes out (now mind you...I had to take off work to wait for them to come out, that's two days of work I missed). He fixed the fuse again. I made sure he stayed there and waited. Sure enough, it quit. Then he said he thinks it's the control panel but unfortunately he didn't carry one in his truck. So we had to wait for them to order it. It took two weeks. They said to call when I got it...Then it took another week for them to come out??????? As for the washer...I have jeans sitting in a bunch of water. I could scream. Maytag should be shut down permanently and not allowed to rip people off like they do. NEVER ever buy a Maytag!

We purchased the Maytag Performance Series MHWE950WW in January 2010. We are a family of 3 and do not wash an excessive amount of laundry. We purchased this washer due to the good reviews in Consumer Reports, along with the reputation of the Co. We did not purchase the extended warranty for this product. About one month ago, it started making a terrible noise during the spin cycle. We called the service company used by Maytag, and the technician spent about 5 minutes with the machine and told us that the bearings and drum needed to be replaced. He said it would cost approximately $1,000 to repair, which is only slightly less than we paid for it two years ago. Maytag refuses to do anything for our machine since we did not buy the extended warranty, and coincidentally, these parts are not covered under the 10 year limited part warranty that is advertised as a benefit for this machine. I think that as consumers, we have a reasonable expectation that a major appliance will last longer than 2 years under normal use. Our last washing machine lasted 19 years. We will never buy a Maytag appliance again!

Bearings shot after 16 months
I purchased a Maytag washer, the 9000 Series, model MHWE950WW, in October of 2010. The washing machine seemed to work fine until about 1 month ago, when the washer became loud in the spin cycle. Finally, last week the noise and vibration became intolerable. We called Maytag service, (we have a service contract) and they sent a service man a couple of days ago. He was in the house five minutes, when he spun the tub by hand and stated that the bearings were shot. He said that it would take about ten days before the new parts would be installed. The bearings in a 16 month old machine were SHOT? How can that be? According to the service man, it happens. Oh Really? It happens if the product is DEFECTIVE AND PORLY MADE. Wait! It gets better. Two days later I received a call from Maytags service people, and was told that the machine would cost $689.00 to repair with new bearings, and that the prorated value of the machine was $629.00, therefore they were not going to replace the bearings, but would instead reimburse me $629.00 instead, since the value of the machine was now less than the cost to repair it with new bearings. The cost for the washer was $899.00; the cost for the washers service contract was $186.31, for three years. Maytag is sending me $629.00 for all my troubles, on a machine that is 16 months old. Get this!!! They will not reimburse me for the remaining 3 years on my service contract. They claim that it is part of the claim total. So here is how it breaks down: $899.00 (excluding taxes and delivery) for the washer, $186.31 for the service contract until 2014. That brings my out of pocket total to $1085.31. I am getting back only $629.00. You do the math! I lost $456.32 in the whole process in less than 16 months and do not have a working washing machine to boot. WAY TO GO MAYTAG! You will not see one cent of my money ever again, and I make will it my lifes work to bad mouth you and your products, every time I pass by a sellers appliance section. I will tell everyone in my development, in my city, in my state, and anyone who will listen, to avoid your products like the plague that you and they are. Your products, business model and your customer service, are the worlds worst. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice? Well, you will never get that chance again. Personally, I will work toward making your company and its products extinct. It is what you deserve for shoddy products and bad business practices. I wish you nothing, because that is what you deserve. NOTHING!!!!
