About - Samsung WF520AB[P]

The Samsung WF520AB[P] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, front-loading washing machine models like the WF520AB[P] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

We purchased this washer after our very expensive Bosch NeXT washer finally gave out after 6 years of heavy use for our family of 5 with 3 small children. We decided on the Samsung after researching it online despite not knowing anyone who had ever had one.

We are SO happy with this washing machine. At this point I feel stupid for keeping the Bosch for as long as we did and putting up with it's sub-par washing performance, noise, breaking down, etc.

Everything is great - it is quiet - the clothes seem more clean than they did with our Bosch and are not as wrinkled when they come out but still spun very dry.

One problem we have had with all our front-loader / high efficiency machines is they can tend to get unbalanced and then never achieve max RPM and the clothes come out too wet and take way too long to dry. I just finished a load that needed to get finished quickly and happened to be standing there as the washer attempted it's final spin and was becoming unbalanced. I watched as it reset itself, it stopped the washing countdown clock, and proceeded to re-distribute the clothes itself 2 or 3 times until it got to a point where it could spin again. Once that happened, the cycle continued and the cycle countdown clock moved forward and the washer finished up just fine (We have the music feature turned on and it plays a nice tune when it finished!).

I would really recommend this machine highly to anyone based on our experience so far.

Comment:
I purchased the washer/dryer almost 2 years ago. I had such fear regarding the purchase because there we so many problems with the front loaders. I did a lot of reading about the complaints and I fully examined the manual after my purchase. I purchased an extended warenty and it was probably a waste of money. Sears did a routine maintenance check about 6 months ago and all was well. I wipe out the rubber gasget after every use. I have had NO mold problems. I do leave the door open when I am not using it as I always did with my top loader. There is a drain that requires periodic draining but I rarely do it. The dryer does not always thoroughly dry, so I use the timed dry setting to additonally dry the item. The loads must be balanced so it is difficult to wash and dry a single item. I love the silver care for the items needing sterilization with cold water. I use the steam for hot water sterilization ( I work in the medical field). I am happy with the machines and they are far more quiet that my old top loader Kennmore. I am hoping that my Samsung will have a similar life span. Time will tell. P.S. I would suggest using HE powder detergent as I have read that it reduces the risk for mold.

Comment:
Based on the great reviews on Samsung washers I purchased the latest steam model when we moved into out new home. However, I ended up returning this washer as water was not draining from the door gasket due to the drain hole placement- as mentioned in a previous review. There was as much as a couple of tablespoons left sitting in the door- it wasn't just damp. I have owned other front loaders and not had this problem. With four kids I am a high frequency washer/user and do a load at least every other day and a white load every fourth day or so - so I was only moderately concerned about a mildew problem as supposedly can be the case with front loading machines. I just couldn't keep anything that was obviously at what I perceived as a higher risk of having issues.

Obviously I could have just gotten a defective unit. However, if you look at the rubber door seals of various brands - some do appear to be less likey to drain well. I was hoping to try a Samsung though and may look for a previous year's model online!
