About - Kenmore 27102

The Kenmore 27102 is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the 27102 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
This washing machine uses way too little water. There is no point in saving water if I have to run a cycle 2 or 3 times to get soil or dirt out of clothing. The spinning cycle works well (most times) but some times it will not want to work. On a few occasions I have placed 2 pillows to wash, they flop on top of each other, and the top side of the top pillow will come out bone dry. I will stop a load at times to check while it is washing and some clothes will be untouched by water. I do not overload the machine; it senses how much clothing is inside the tub and automatically adjusts the water to be less than that. Setting it to extra heavy will not result in more water being used, just more time agitating in the same 3 drops of dirty water.

Comment:
Immediately following the warranty expiration the lid switch had to be replaced ($120). Now, a few months later, having more problems. Suspect either the lid switch again or sensor problem ($). Machine never handled full or bulky loads without becoming unbalanced. Now it won't complete cycles...

Comment:
I owned this washing machine only one day and returned it after a couple of loads of laundry. It is very noisy and when it is not balanced it bangs very loud. Because it has no agitator it is hard to keep the clothes balanced. The store was good about returning it. I do not recommend this product at all.
