The LG WT4870C[W] is part of the washing machine
test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine
models like the WT4870C[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.
About This Brand
South Korean company LG was the first to market with steam washers; the company claims its machines provide real steam (created by a steam generator). The latest wrinkle from LG is what it calls the Allergiene cycle. That cycle, says LG, reduces and removes 95 percent of dust mites and pet dander from a load. LG washers range in price from $900 to $1,600.
Energy star The federal Energy Star program, administered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, identifies a wide range of home appliances that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. These appliances can help you use less energy at home and save money on your utility bills.
Stainless-steel tub Tubs constructed of stainless steel are likely to be more durable than plastic or porcelain, and they allow for higher spin speeds. Plastic is the next most durable choice.
Auto temp. control This feature automatically mixes hot and cold water to reach the chosen wash temperature (which differs on various makes of washers). It's a good way to compensate for normal variations in tap-water temperature and prevents problems caused by water that's too cold, which keeps detergent from working properly.
Auto temp. control
Auto bleach dispenser Automatic Bleach dispenser releases the bleach at the proper point in the cycle, giving the detergent additives sufficient time to work.
I guess we are the lucky ones as we have had zero problems with our machine since our laundry comes out clean each time. The only issue we have had so far is it doesn't like heavy loads such as rugs etc. and will occasionally get out of balance at times....but so did our old one so otherwise all is good, no breakdowns at this point. This machine is somewhat complicated compared to the machine we replaced, which was 20 yrs. old, so reading the manual has been essential and has made using it go seamlessly...I keep the manual with the machine so it can be easily referenced when needed and have to admit to using it a number of times with this complicated washer.

This machine started making a very loud noise within the first week on the heavier loads. Called for repairman to check it out but he found nothing and thought the machine was just out of balance. During the very next load I heard a loud POP but the washer showed no error codes and it completed the cycle. When the end of cycle buzzer went off the floor was flooded and upon cleaning up found a broken plastic part under the washer. Sears replaced the washer with a like model yesterday and I am hoping this one is better.

No Hot water
When selecting how water setting, the machine fills with a little hot water, pauses for a few minutes, then continues filling with cold water. The result is water at best luke-warm.

I don't know if this is standard operation for the washer, or if mine is defective.
