About - Maytag Centennial MVWC360A[W]

The Maytag Centennial MVWC360A[W] is part of the washing machine test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, top-loading washing machine models like the Centennial MVWC360A[W] are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Washing performance:
This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound and maximum capacity test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)

Energy efficiency:
This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound and maximum loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.

Water efficiency:
This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load and each machine's maximum load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.

Comment:
Purchased on sale preseason for a summer home. When weather warmed up we started to wash the linens and realized we made a huge mistake. Our 30 day return policy expired and this washer did not measure up. Our low end cheaper model (was still in working order) was removed to replace this mistake of a washer. We now are the not so proud owners of an energy efficient washer that has extremely long cycles (eating up our electricity), soap filled clothes that have to be washed multiple times (soo much for less water) to remove the detergent, cycle with light indicator that does not match cycle, loads regularly go off balance (soo much for the large capacity) , loud and obnoxious grinding, buzzing and clicking sounds. Double the time of my other energy efficient washer.

Comment:
I bought this machine because it was well-rated by Consumer Reports, on sale, and high efficiency. I have always used agitator type machines. The differences in operation between the two types are numerous and, for me, very time consuming. When this one breaks, and I believe it will break soon, I will get an agitator type.

Specific complaints are:
1.Will not stay balanced no matter how it is loaded.
2.Takes 3-5 minutes to unlock when I pause it to balance the load or want to add a sock.
3.Twists and ties long sleeves and legs, and twists and rolls sheets into tight balls. Literally, knots and very tight balls.
4.Does not have a detergent dispenser. With my agitator I diluted the deterent in the wash water before the cycle started. This machine doesn't indicate when the water has filled the tub.
5.Descriptions of cycles all sound the same. For example:
Normal Regular - Use this cycle for normally soiled cottons. This cycle features a spray rinse.
Normal Light - Use this cycle for light weight cottons that are lightly soiled. This cycle features a spray rinse.
What's the difference?
6.Does not have a fabric softener dispenser. I get around this by starting an Exta Rinse with Fabric Softener after the full wash cycle, setting a timer for 5 minutes, pushing the pause button (waiting 3 or 4 minutes for it to unlock the lid), adding fabric softener to the water, then continuing the cycle to the end.
*Special Note: The instructions say to use the Downey Ball for fabric softener. However, the official Downey Ball webpage says Please note: the Downy Ball should not be used in HE machines. User reviews on that page are horror stories of ruined clothes.

Since I'm running an extra rinse on every load of clothes, it is not energy efficient for me. I know how to choose temperature, speed, duration, strength, but cannot figure out if there is any appreciable difference between Normal Regular and Normal Light cycles. It takes almost twice as long to finish a load of clothes. And I'm spending twice as much time tending the machine. Maybe I'm too old to be that patient.

My old machine worked beautifully for 34 years. It was beginning to sound tired. In two or three years when this one breaks, I will get another agitator.

Comment:
THE MOST FRUSTRATING THING ABOUT THIS MACHINE IS HOW CLOTHES COME OUT DIRTY AND WITH STAINS.I'VE HAD TO WASH CLOTHES SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THEY COME OUT CLEAN, WHICH DECEIVES THE PURPOSE OF ENERGY AND WATER EFFICIENCY.I'VE TAKEN PICTURES OF MY DIRTY STAINED CLOTHES AFTER A WASH.ALSO THE CLOTHES GET TANGLED UP BADLY.I DONT THINK MY CLOTHES WILL LAST VERY LONG WITH THIS MACHINE.I DISLIKE THIS MACHINE,BUT I CANT AFFORD ANOTHER ONE.THE THOUGHT OF SPENDING MY HARD EARN MONEY ON A PIECE OF GARBAGE MAKES ME MAD. I CANT STAND WASHING CLOTHES NOW.THIS MACHINE IS A HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT.
